Porsche makes good cars. We all know that, with that said the 911 & 928 (of same model years) are two very different animals. Both are reliable, when maintained, it will be more expensive to maintain a 928 vs a 911, but not by that much if you do your own work! It appears the $2K a year rule (plus or minus depending on how much wrenching you do) for a 928 is about right. I don't know about 911's. However a 911 will cost you just about double what an equal condition 928 will of the same model year.... So if you have a $20K budget..spend it all on a nice 911..it breaks...your wife will be screaming. Now a nice $10K 928 and $10k leftover for repairs/improvements...that will fix most common issues! One thing a 911 can't give you is an exclusive ride....everywhere I go I see older 911's...even at the concours events....there just isn't that many 928's out there!

Your post is confusing at best. This car was in need of restoration, after being neglected and stored for 5 years by the PO. This is not maintenace stuff. Apparently the many years of being actif in the PCA did not spare you from buying this one.

Is question was two part. I adressed the same price part and others have adressed the maintenance part. $ for $, the 928 is still best value.

I dessagree, I drive mine every day and never been stranded...

Now, I have to go pray to the 928 gods to protect me against TB & TT malfonctions.

Have I said that I love my 928!

I have owned lots of fun cars in my life. The 928 is hands down the most fun. I haven't owned a 911 so I can't directly compare the two. Take them both for a test drive. They are both nice cars but you will get a heck of alot more car for your money if you buy the 928. But we are all biased here.

Sierra Shark,

well said!
I guess the anti 911 crowd or those posters who never have owned a 911 know more about the differences in maintenance cost between the two cars than those of us who own both cars, drive them and pay the bills.

Go figure

Hey DandeMan, Fabio421, and RDS928S it's great having you guys chime in here but remember part of that 928 ownership cost is kicking down the payment to become full on members of Rennlist. Keeps this kind of information highway open for us all. And you've got to admit the help you can get here is really priceless. And if you already did, Right On! Get them to change your signature.

Hey Randy, you know where to send my commission check.

I guess I'll have to buy a 911 in order to validate the fact that they are twice as expencive as a 928.
I haven't read anything about the 928 being cheaper to care for than a 911.

So csb5150, you will have to buy both in order to decide.
Apparently, opinion from 928 owners only, is without value regarding the 928s. Go figure.

Seirra Shark

Been a member for a few months.
I know I need to change the sig page and post some pics.
The info is priceless especially in avoiding some long hunt and seek sessions with my P-car mechanic at $70.00/hr..
So far the 928 community has saved me some serious cash.

RDS

P.S All that money saved on my 928 which someone said is" way cheaper to buy and own"- I guess I can spend it on upgrades for my 911(which it does'nt need)
Ha!

DandeMan, It's really great that you've landed a good car. I sincerely hope that it continues to serve you well. Having owned both kinds I can tell you I never spent anything close on a 911 that I have on my 928's. And I've had, and continue to have, some great 928's. The 928 will always be my first love. I've got to think you've never experienced a timing belt failure, full engine rebuild or tranny seizure on a 928. Feel free to correct me if you have. But until you have you can't even begin to imagine how fast, or how much, your bank account bleeds money. Not that any 911 is cheap, just the frequency of repair is less, as is the overall cost of parts and labor. Admittidly, alot depends on the condition of the car to start with. No 928, let me repeat that, NO 928 is cheap to own or maintain properly, unless you can do the majority of the work yourself. Cheap to buy, yes, maintain no. So again I say, If you can budget for the maintenance buy the 928.

Sierra (funny name for a guy )
I agree with you on all counts, I will never dispute the high cost of maintaning a 928. The $ will start to bleed when I store the beast for winter and do some R&R on it to get it one knotch better. But if one is lusting for an 928 (weekend car to boot) and setels(sp) for is second choice bassed on more $$ maintenance without taking into considiration the way lower $$ of accisition, I feel obligated to informe him that the pleasure that he will be losing in prosses outway any additional $ in maintenace. I also believe that most -if not all- of you agree with that statement.

I will say it again for the last time in this thread : Find the best example you can (take your time), get a PPI and if you get the green flag, do it. You will have the time of your life. Yes, it's that good. Every time I strap myself in it, I know its going to be a great to amazing drive.

PS: If the thought of having a belt faliure scares you, well don't buy it. You will freek out at the mental images of bent valves etc...but if you like some "risky bussines" in you life, the 928 is the car for you

PPS: Yes, I was fortunate to have landed a nice one and I hope it will stay that way. It took me 1 1/2 year to find this one. I'm no village idiot

csb5150

Either way you go will involve some risk, some luck and more than some money. If you take as long as DandeMan did to find a car you'll probably come out way ahead. Do your homework. Take your time. Ask tons of questions here. Get a PPI if possible (regardless of which kind of car you pick). More than enough people on this site to steer you the right way.

P.S. The Sierra part of my handle is for the mountain range here in California. You know the tall pointed things with snow on them? DANDY MAN ??? Sounds a little light in the loffers if you know what I mean. Now don't be like that! I'm only teasing. You've got alot to add to this site and I for one appreciate it. Drive it like you stole it! Best of luck to you CSB.

I always reccomend a subcription to Excellence magazine. You will get a lot of information, but also a serious case of the I wants. I just want to say I love 928s, and have had three. They are quite addictive. Given the question of affordability I reccomend the 911. Given the question of which I prefer, I like them both but I have sharks. I am just not rabidly attatched to them as I like a whole lot of cars. I feel lucky to be able to own my 928s.
As I drive a lot of NY county routes and one lane roads I tend to drive my Beemer more than the S4. It is more wieldy. If I had a 911 I would probably drive that over the 928 on the same roads.

One thing I always reccomend to people looking at cars is to test drive several different cars of each model considered. It is a lot of fun, and you get to experience what you are considering owning. I woud never consider owning a Jaguar, but I am glad I have driven them. Right now I am selling my 944S, A great car, because I am considering having another kind of driving experience. I will probably always have a 928, as long as I can drive them. I expect there will be other Porsches and other cars, because I don't have to get a divorce to get one, and I like to have new experiences. How about a Miata turbo with sticky tires? It could happen.

GO with a pristine 944 or 944 turbo. Fast. Inexpensive. Reliable. Spend some of the savings on a great paint job and interior detailing. She'd love it! 928 is to complex and 911 to costly for the price.

Another perspective ... consider a 968. Ridiculously inexpensive to buy, but made in Stuttgart with a full-dose of Porsche DNA ... with some easy mods you can run with a Boxster S while enjoying a hatchback bodystyle that honors the incomparable 928. Finally, with a few thousand 968s imported to the US, it may be even rarer than a shark.
