Need advice on repainting door lock surround black
Yesterday, my Dad and I tried to paint the door locks only to fail. The paint didn't even stick!
As far as the prep work goes, we cleaned the locks with soap and water after rubbing it with some 600 grit sand paper. We used a paint pen by Testors (company that makes enamel paints for models). About 30 min later it flaked clean off!
This is probably a dumb question but should we have used a primer prior to application of the paint? BTW, we stripped the paint off the locks again with steel wool. Has anyone primered the door locks prior to repaint???

Use the Jager kit. It works beautifully and lasts better than paint. http://www.jageng.com/ext_detail.htm

Interesting. I'm assuming it's applied on with an adhesive backing from the way they describe it as an overlay. But would it still stick after x,xxx car washes???

Ask EdMD. He had done all of his locks with the kit. I have the lock and rear window kit but I haven't had time to install it yet. You use heat and it molds to the lock cover. Everything I've gotten from Jager has been top quality so I'm pretty sure it's going to work well and last.

I have the Jager kit. Works well, very easy to install, and lasts quite a while. It also comes with spare overlays, for when they wear out. Also comes with very slick "V-8 watercooled" clear decals for the front marker lights(though that may actually be the window switch overlay kit, which i also have)
I had pix of the stuff installed, but i think i deleted them by accident. Doh!!!!
jager is located in the US, i've spoken to the owners on the phone a couple times, they're really nice guys.

Stig, Nicole sells Jager pieces at her website. I think she is still in Germany this week, but maybe send her a PM anyway, I'm sure she checks in.

The overlays work beautifully and stick very well. Before I put mine on, I went over the surround with fine sandpaper and then wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. The overlays have been on for years without any lifting.

Stig, If you use primer use it lightly. Bill Swift, and I preped with 600 paper, cleaned with alcohol, used no primer, and used Crylon semi flat spray paint. I have washed the car several times even tapped the ring with my key by accident, and the paint looks as good as the day I painted it.
