Default Oil Cooler

I finally pulled the bellypan on the White GT (90). It has been leaking a fair amount of oil and I couldn't take it anymore. Anyhow it seems the oil cooler has a leak on the pass side. I hadn't run the car all day yet when I wiped the area clean it would only take 10 - 15 seconds for another drop to form.

Any tricks to pulling/replacing the cooler? Anything else I can do while it is apart. Can I make it bigger, stronger, better?

Jim,
Pretty easy to pull out.
You will need new O rings if you want to reinstall "ask me how I know"
Mine did the same allthough the leak was slower.
The leak actually stops during the winter.
Bought another cooler on eBay for about $60.
Took a chance but it leaks as well.
Had to put the old one back.
A new one is about $500.

I had to replace mine twice. Once with a used unit (lasted 2 years) then with a new one.
There really isn't a lot of room for an aftermarket cooler.
Next time I'll be changing over to a radiator with the oil cooler inside.

I bought a Setrab cooler for my '83 when I had to replace the radiator and did not get one with a built in oil cooler. You are welcome to come take a look. It's not in the car yet. I am going to mount it in front of the A/C fan. (If I ever get time to work on the car.)

You could do like me and install an aftermarket air-to-oil cooler. I purchased a Hayden kit, which uses a sandwich-plate adapter at the oil filter, and I mounted the cooler down in the grill area in front of the radiator and auxiliary fan. Devek sells the parts to block off your now useless oil cooler lines at the block. I think the Hayden kit was about $110.
Which brings up a question: I'm not certain what kind of cooler your car came with- mine had an in-tank cooler installed in the radiator. I couldn't find a decent radiator with an in-tank cooler when my aftermarket radiator failed, so I used a non cooler radiator and installed the kit. Voila. If you have the factory air-to-oil cooler...then call the big 3 and ask if they have one in stock. I don't think it is a good idea to try to weld or otherwise attempt to repair this part...

I know a cat who may have one for sale. I dunno if its compatible with your application but .......

Its from my old 84S2 - and NO it doesnt leak.

The one for the auto tranny which mounts in front of the radiator as displayed in the attached picture. (Not this one - Its mounted on my track car)

John,

Can you elaborate a bit.?...I was hoping to plumb in an aftermarket cooler on the GT..already have the cooler...with aux fans and AN-8 fittings..Was hoping to pull the stock lines to the rad cooler and have them rebuilt with the AN fitting one the one end..and extended so it can come around the front of the rad?..

Is there a trick to getting the oil lines up and around the rad up front?..

I have a cooler as pictured above available. It is the old transmission cooler from my automatic.

I converted the car to manual and the cooler doesn't leak.

Tom,

The 90GT has the cooler under the radiator and is subject to being broken if the belly pan hits a curb or driveway. Slowly cracks the cooler.

Porsche had the better idea of keeping the cooler protected in the radiator for street cars.
The S4 is very tight to get lines around the radiator. My track car runs them around the radiator on the driver’s side to a front mounted cooler. Easy since everything except the radiator is gone!

The "external cooler" concept seems to work the best, but be very careful how you lead the lines from the block.(My GT racer 'scraped off' it's external cooler lines during an off track excursion, resulting in a total engine meltdown) If you use a Devek supplied sandwich plate to 'get' the oil out at the filter mounting, be aware the opening out of the plate into the cooler lines may be somewhat restricted. Mocal makes that adapter plate and lots of various sized coolers. My Mocal plate needed some grinder work to enlarge the "oil out" port to match the cooler line sizes. You can also source the parts from many of the racer supply places, along with all the needed lines and AN fittings. B.A.T. is one internet source I have had good luck with for oil applications. My cooler was mounted in the right fender, in front of the wheel. We cut some louvers into the fender liner to allow good airflow.

Bill, put one on his Koenig, perhaps he has some pics. I think its mounted in the front left fender somwhere..under the light?

Question

What I intended to do was just use the fittings out of the block that connected with the old oil cooler that was in the radiator. I was planning on buying an adapter that changes the outside size to AN -12 and making up new lines.

Is their something wrong with doing it that way?

Why would you need an oil filter adapter (sandwich) plate if the in and out ports are already there?

Also, isn't there a thermostat that keeps the oil from going through the cooler until it is up to temperture?
