I bet that if he ever painted his car, it was done with a little more care and didn't cost $299.95!!! They do cheap paint work that is fine for many beaters is what Dave is saying. I just have to say that they are a low cost production shop and that is what people come to expect....CHEAP. Unless your shop is the only Maaco on the earth to shoot Glasurit or Spies Hecker, or ever Standox, you just can't get the same quality out of Sherwin Williams or PPG Global. Refinsh products just cost way too much any more if you want quality.

I seem to recall that the old hot rodders would put the headers and dual exhausts on the car and then paint them aft of the collectors with cheap spray paint. They would then take it out for a few hard runs. Wherever the paint burned off to is where they would put the crossover. Obviously this wouldn't work with cats. One can luck out, but it is good to know that quality crossovers exist. My question would be this. With a well engineered system, where does the power band increase? Do you get a better low end? I am thinking that this would be a real benefit in day to day driving.

If you check out my posts with the dyno sheets, our gains are across the entire rpm range. That's one of the things that took a lot of time to do. I was working for an across the board increase, not just a peak number.

I welcome all competitors to step up with their X-over and do a comparison. I'll even throw them on the dyno, side by side, same car, same day, etc. With what I've learned doing this project, I'm confident that our X will outperform all others.

fst951- Maaco actually uses pretty good paint. Where they typically fall absolutely flat on thier face is wrt prep work.

If you get a car prepped by a good body man, then send it to maaco for spraying, the results can be pretty amazing- you'd never believe a maaco painted the car. Seen it many times.

Hey Giovanni,

That is a pretty cost-effective performance mod. Since you gutted your cats, it would be hard to do a before & after dyno, but I believe that you have found very good bang for the buck on this.

Good job!

Hi there.

I am not saying the paint is poor. I am just saying that is is lower priced, it has to be. For a full paint job on a 928 GTS you are looking at about $2500 in materials at our cost! Is it expensive? Yes it is. But labor runs twice as much so we can't cut any corners. I am not doubting your ability to do body work and paint and am not intending to take over this thread.

You're talking concours level quality(or close to it) bro.

Obviously you're never going to get that at Maaco(the paint they use just isn't that high a quality), but you can still get a very nice paint job if you have the car properly prepped by a good body man before you send it to them.

Like i said, i've seen some pretty good looking cars come out of maaco if they were done that way.

BTW, i'm not meaning to give you any crap, i only mentioned Maaco at all because the CEO is a former fellow Sharkster(and cause he's a really nice guy).

His name is Anthony A, btw.

That's what the AA in both MAACO and AAMCO mean.
