Default Painting the INterior??

I took a few minutes today to pull the Seats out of the 1984 928s (auto).

It becomes more and more evident the neglect of the PO.

They are both power seats (didn't work when I went to pick up the car, but I'll worry about that later).

As a nice surprise, both seatbelt (lower) ends are not attached at all--just slipped in beside the seat. Missing 3 total allen bolts/flat threaded plates to attach the seats to the base (1 on the driver's side, 2 on the passenger side).

The carpet has large parts that are not original (different thickness from the original material, no bound edges, however, the color match is fine..).

The topcoating (sound absorber?) for the floor (and, as I already knew) and cargo area is cracked and falling apart.

I am wondering about cleaning the old topcoat (is it a rubber compound?), re-applying, and then painting over it (yes, I know it will be hidden by the carpet when it goes back in, but I'll know how bad it looks).

Any recommendations on what to do to remove the old floor coating?
Cleaning it up?
What to replace it with?
And, finally, what paint to use on top?

Thanks!!
