Default what's it worth?

a co-worker knowing that I'm a p-car kinda guy asked me what his buddies 928 is worth, it appears to be in kinda rough shape- only seen the pics in the link below, and I don't know the sharks at all so I thought I'd throw this out there and see what some people more knowledgable than me think. Thanks for any input

Depends a lot on maintenence..

If the interior is bad, then the question comes up--did he do required repairs? When was the last timing belt change? Etc.

So, the price range is $2k (if running) to $7k (outside max if he has all maintenance records, etc).

From those pics of the interior and engine - I don't think he can get CLOSE to $7k. Also - what's with the hood....it appears bowed, and the front bumpercover is indented - it may have hit something/been backed in to.

IF (BIG IF) all maintenance is up to date and TB/WP (Timing belt/waterpump) have been done in the last 12 months....$3500 TOPS!

This one appears to be one of those 'bargains'...someone will buy it for, say, $3500...put a TON of sweat equity and about $5k in it, and have a shark worth $6k.

HOWEVER - if it happens to be an 86.5, rather then a 'plain ol 86'...you can add a few bucks (maybe another $1k) to the above amounts. IF it is an 86.5 - because the interior is so bad, it could maybe be a candidate for a track car.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....

PS = Where in FL is the car located? One of the local R'listers might want to come take a look.

i don't know what the deal is with that hood, but it doesn't look too bad other than that and the drivers seat. it's a 5-speed, so i think that'll add some value. i'd say 3500-4500.

the car is comewhere close to the west palm beach area, I just sent the owner an email to see what he's asking. How do you tell if its an 86.5 or 86 car? what are the differences?

You can tell by the last four digits of the VIN number. If it ends with a number 1000 or more it's an '86.5.

jyoon - look again (if you click on the pic when it comes up - it will zoom)
-Door panels pulling loose
-headliner sagging
-rear carpet gone
-rear seats shot
-engine looks like it hasn't seen ANY attention in years
etc....

car still looks fairly decent from the outside. i think sometimes you have to look at the car and just think about using it as is and not the cost to get it perfect. if the car runs fine, then why not just drive it as is and be happy. there isn't always a need to poor in tons of money and make it perfect. the door panel needs a new clip and you can glue the headliner back up. you can get some seat covers for $200ish and it will be fairly decent. if you don't like the rear seat backs, you can remove them for less weight. use the car to track. or gut the interior, anyway, i think $3500 for a decent looking exterior running 928 5-speed seems like a pretty decent deal. $2600 is a very good deal imho. engine and tranny are worth that.

That is a very good 5spd 32V for 2600 dollars. I'd buy it at that price for sure. I think with a very small investment in parts the car can be worth a lot more. Colour combo isn't that popular but for that price you have a great project and a runner too. Looking at the engine it surely needs a lot of updating, but generally this is a good car barring any major engine and drivetrain issues. As it is, he could likely get about 5k if he spent a little on cleaning it up / replacing small things, and if not, he could get maybe 3500. It's all about opportunity, and a local buyer (no ship charges) etc ....

Anyone notice the buckled hood and front end dmg? Sheesh, I'm thinking someone got it running from an abandoned state and slapped a $200 maaco paint job on it. I think the selling price is about right if it runs well, has brakes, etc.

needs a good amount of work
seats, dash, pod, body...
and I'm not sure I'd drive it given the looks of that engine bay

$2600 is about right not having any history on the car

from the looks of it, the hood was pried open resulting in the body damage

OMIGOD, that engine bay...well you can tell by the lack of finger prints in all that dust he has not done much maintenance. And that interior ....ewwwwww talk about *road hard and put away wet*...eyuuuuk. But despite all those issues $2600 is a steal! But I have seen worse selling for $4-5K
