Default clutch master cylinder leaking!

hey guys, the master cylinder is leaking into the cabin of my 88. i just did a search on this and read where someone sugests simply replacing the cylinder internals with fresh parts, leaving the outside cylinder in place on the car. is this a good idea?

how common is it for these to fail? if it fails big time will it drain the brake reservoir and lead to brake failure? thanks in advance!

the simple changing of the guts is typically all that is needed. The bore in the cylinder is harder than the piston and rubber seal. The low brake fluid level will warn you before you would be out of brake fluid plus a internal partial divider assures that only 1/2 of the reservoir would drain completely.

Having done the master cylinder R&R several times, I would rebuild it in place. Just make sure to get a brake cylinder honer and one the cylinder walls well and clean the heck out of the cylinder.
