Default '90 GT vs '88 S4

Was curious as to what the engine differences are between the '90 GT and the '88 S4? I know the marketing folks advertised a 10 hp gain for the GT and believe there's a diff. in cam profile although displacement remains equal. Are the valve sizes different. Also realise the 'eproms' are tweeked?

Any chassis differences?

Looking at replacing my S4 with a GT but trying to justify the $$$ difference.

Stiffer springs. Harsher ride, and better cornering. Exhaust slightly different. I think you got the engine stuff. The fuel maps are diff, as are the PSD, and wheels. All GTs are 5speed most S4s are auto.

Thanks Doc. I already have the GT eproms in my car but I'm not going to the extent of replacing the cams.

Perhaps the Bilstien/Eibach package will give similar/ better handling and the my newly ordered Modular X Over Ex will give the exhaust rumble as well as the increase in hp. Just wont have the 5 speed.

Much, much faster. Numbers don't accurately describe how much faster it feels, and how much more "usable" the power is.

The ride is more composed and the handling is not as sloppy as non GT cars... Those cars are just at a higher level....

So true. I would have posted something similar but was afraid of starting something.

You guys are making this potential buy go to the next level quite quickly. I have another thread going and the dealer is receiving 5 stars.

As well the dealer has recieved an inquiry email i sent him late this afternoon and he's sending all sorts of pics and info.

Anyone read a VIN and let me know what the car is:

I think, shortest gearbox makes the GT better performance than the S4.

In reading the VIN, we could just say that, it is a 928 from 1990 from ROW (than US). In 1990, only the GT had manual trans, all S4 were A/T.

Code:
WP0ZZZ92ZLS841135
123456789ABCDEFGH

123  = West Germany Porsche
456 = filler in ROW cars
78   = 92(8)
9    = fillerin ROW cars
A    = model year '90
B    = made in Stuttgart
C    = (92)8
D    = ROW S4 or GT
EFGH = 1135 - 60 = 1075th ROW production car made in 1990 model year out of 2592
Build date should be around 1989 December +/- two months.

Pistons are different in GT engines. Well between valve pockets is smaller than in S4.

The gearing, suspension(sport), and the cams make the GT come alive above 4,000 rpm. For driving around town and just cruising around, the S4 is probably a better choice. But if you like to get into the upper half of the rev range regularly, the GT is the better tool for the job. The '90 is a more complex car than the '88 though with airbags, psd, and the digital dash.

Can't go wrong with a good GT. I love mine!

So far the differences amount to:

pistons, cams, revised eprom mapping, exhaust system, suspension, final gearing.

The car I'm looking at was originally sold in Japan and does not have air bags or a sun roof.

Thanks to all for the input, will drive the S4 for a 2000 km round trip to view the beast; wonder what car will come home
