engine oil cooling
hey guys in the course of retrofiting the GTS engine in my 86 i am replacing the radiator with one that dosent have oil coolers. as a result i am planning to use an S4 transmission cooler to cool the engine oil, mounted in front of the radiator. will this cool the oil too much?
If I am not mistaken, the oil has a thermostatically controlled path in the newer motors. Hard to find an actual oil path diagram in any of the manuals, but I think there is a valve that does not allow the oil to leave the motor on it's way to the cooler until the motor is warmed up, so if you take your oil from the same outlet that was used to go to the original cooler in the rad. You should be fine with a different cooler.

IIRC, all 928s after 79,( or maybe 80?) had engine oil coolers which involved a thermostat at the block exit point, so cold oil oil didnt go to a cold radiator and get even thicker, If the engine originally was fitted with oil cooler lines, you should be ok to fit an external radiator for it.

thanks for the informative replies, looks like i will be fine although im deleting the aircon to simplify the process so i might overheat if not the engine.. by the way, do you guys monitor transmission temperatures?
ok, one more question. the oil cooler i am going to use is the transmission cooler from an S4 auto, the one normaly mounted on top of the radiator. ive just noticed that the engine oil pipes are way bigger in diameter than the inlet/outlet on the tranny cooler i have here, will that be a problem?
