You argue Profit/investment, maybe profit is the wrong word..... But, any money the seller receives from sale of the car now is most likely money in the bank, unless the bank still holds a title on it which is doubtful.

I am somewhere between partially and strongly disagree with this statement.

Whatever you spend on your 928...remember that 50% of that cost should be estimated as a first year cost for maintenance and upkeep. Afterall whether you want to believe it or not about our beloved 928's, we are still buying somebody elses problem or headache. Now if you spend $3000 on your 1981 928 and expect to only spend $1500 to do maintenance and upkeep there is a strong likelyhood that this may not be enough cash to "Up-Fix der Porsche" but if you planned on selling the day after you completed the work don't plan on getting more that $4500 for you $3000 up-fixed 928. If you buy a $40,000 1995 GTS $20,000 may be on the high side but at that point if you want to keep your pristine 95 as a pristine automobile then plan on spending some cash to do what is right for the car to maintain a reasonably high percentage of its value. If you don't care and are the type of person that flushes your money down the toilet then, buy it and expect to do nothing, and then let it rot from your neglect...in the end thats how most poorly maintained 928's get to the point of being severely neglected cars...becuase somebody brought it and did not plan on spending much money to maintain it and just drives the car to the point that they sell and add their complaints to this list about how expensive the car is to maintain (What is up with that!!!???... they never did any maintenance in the first place or barely if they did).

DO NO BUY A 928 IF YOU ARE NOT PLANNING ON SPENDING SOME MONEY TO CLEAN UP AREA'S OF THE PO's NEGLECT AND WE ALL NEGLECT OUR CARS IN SOME AREA WHETHER WE WANT TO ADMIT IT OR NOT BUT...YOU DO KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Dude,

if you are worried about spending $1500 bucks on the car you shouldn't own one. It a $13k car with supercar parts prices.

Hmm, when I bought my 928 after doing some research I calculated in the cost of WP/TB as part of my initial purchase cost. Even if the PO told me it was perfect it was still going in to be checked "just in case". Also all front oil seals, water hoses and etc, then I added another few thousand for repairs again "just in case".

In the end it did indeed need TB/WP, oil seals AND torque tube, I had already budgeted enough to cover it so no real pain. As for buying "as is", I tend to agree a little with this;

A $13K example of a 928S4 should not need X amount of dollars in repair as you back it out of the seller's driveway
If by "as is", he meant it was not really driveable then it should have been a few thousand cheaper to start with, but I expect that was not his meaning. He obviously thought it was OK and is trying to do the best for you he can. So you have two choices, walk away, and just maybe come back in a few weeks/months when he either a) drops the price or b) fixes it and re-advertises for the same price, or buy as is, accepting his offer to help pay the bills.

My point exactly! Drop the price or FIX the car and readvertise for the same price. As a buyer i would even be willing to pay $13K and do the repair myself if the seller provides the needed parts to fix it.

Ok, this is an interesting thread. 0-60 I know of a car for you that is not currently on the market, but the owner would sell it for under 20k. Its an 88 s4, diamond blue metallic, burgundy interior--5spd with lsd. car has about 115K on it. Its very clean (not perfect, but damn good) exterior is a 8.5, interior is 9.0 (i have high standards). is the car well maintained. well, lets see, the last 4 owners have been die hard 928 guys including marc anderson (owner of 928 international) his employee ron gottschalkd, myself and now a gentlemen in the bay area who has owned it since (2 years) and loves it like a child.

If you want me to reach out to him and let him know i'm happy to. This car is as reliable and clean s any 928 out there (except my current car!).

I think too many people let these cars sit! And as they let them sit they think they are "keeping them nice" when actually in my experience it is the worst thing for them. That sounds like the case for this car.

The good part of all this is you weren't tempted to drive it till the timing belt went. Sounds like it could be a fair deal if it doesn't take ten tries to sort the driveabilty issue. You always remember your wedding day so the real question is are you an cup half full sort of person. Right now I'm not into wrenching, as my business is really engrossing ,so I want a car that I can just drive when I want. That would be my 633 CSI. I also wanted a car that had vast reserves of performance, that is beautiful and turns heads. That would be my 89 S4. It is still being sorted out , but I had commited to having a 928 and knew what I was in for before purchase. I had a PPI , it had extensive service records, and still it needed more. The lure and promise of an excellent 928 keep me going. I have put enough into it to buy a low mileage C5 Corvette, if that had been what I wanted. You can never get hurt by walking away from this deal, so if you aren't prepared to pay, don't play. If I sell my 928 I will be giving a super deal to the next owner of a super sorted super car. I will want to know that it will go to a good home where it will be loved and cherished. Are you offering that to the car you are considering? If not, don't consider it. Sooner than later it will test your fidelity to things Porsche, and you must respond positively, or the car will languish and you will become discouraged. Only the joy that you have known previously will keep you moving towards the future. Was it love at first sight? You can still walk away. Do you love this car? If you can get it sorted and running right for less than say 17K I would say that it was worth the time and effort. Is it worth that to you? I don't advise people to get married, and I sure don't recommend that anyone ever buy a 928. A lot of people do both, and some are actually happy that they did. For better or for worse. You already know what you need to do, so do it and then never look back. Don't forget the sunscreen.
