Default wiring harness routing

I was wondering if this is correct, it's kind of in the way of the cnter timing belt cover and I don't see anywhere else I can move it without removing the alternator.

Mine runs behind the timing covers. You can see it along the top of this pic. It goes down behind the cover just to the left of where the distributer cap sticks into the picture.

Then I may have to sacrifice the cover and put it back that way when I'm done, which seems like a better idea.

Hmmm--

Happen to have mine apart at this very moment. '89 S4. Not quite the same car but may give you a clue.

On theS4, the easiest way to get the harness out of the way for the belt removal is to pull the multipin connector above the jump-start terminal, and disconnect the red wire from that same harness where it connects at the jump-start terminal. The wire normally routes from those terminals through a clamp that screws to a bracket just behind the pass-side cam gear, then runs down and forward under that gear and cover. It goes across the front of the engine, in front of the dipstick tube. At that point, it has a connector for the AC clutch coil attached. Disconnect that wire, body of the connector stays with the harness pigtail. Harness continues toward the driver side through two clamps that hang on the bottom of the center bracket with allen capscrews, below the plug wires. Harness continues to driver side, then toward the rear of the center cover through the gap in the driver side of the center cover, through a clamp, and down to the rear of the alternator, the oil sender, switches, etc. At the point where it goes through the gap, a single conductor branches off the harness and routes to the driver side inner fender, forward behind (to the right of as you are looking at it from the front...) the bracket that holds the power steering reservoir, and connects to a terminal point just under the lip of the fender there. Disconnect the end of the single wire there, and pull it back around the bracket, and the harness is now disconnected enough to remove the cover and the belt.

Here's a snapshot of the S4 cable in place, ready to pull the damper and the center cover. I have the procedure on video, but it's still in the camera. I came back inside to print a few instruction pages and saw your post. PM me if you need more info, and maybe a copy of the video segment could be sent tomorrow after it's pulled from the camera. Just let me know.

Bob, yours is interesting, it actually goes through the center of the belt. I haven't got that problem, it's just routed through a narrow space that leaves no room to get the cover off. I have a suspicion it should be behind the belt, like in Matt's Euro I've had my alternator replaced so often, it was probably rerouted that way. When I'm done with the belt, I may have my professional mechanic reroute it (I don't want to mess with the electrical).
