Well, when it happens again, do a quick "screwdriver check" for spark.
If you have spark, then you have some strange fuel issue.
If you have no spark, then you have some kind of electrical problem.
The nice thing is that if the car won't start, you can troubleshoot what is causing it not to start.
It's not as bad as a totally intermittent problem.
It sounds like some part does not like getting hot, and when it does, it shuts down.
Sounds electrical to me, but a couple quick checks with a meter will get to the bottom of things.

I just came back in from trying to start it again. It didn't sit too long to totally cool off but it did fire up for a real short time ,a second or two and quit. So I am going to make up a jumper and bypass the FP relay . I am thinking either that or the pump itself or maybe even a crapped up filter .WE shall see? Thanks for any and all input!!!! AL

OK, I got great spark and I even checked the fuel filter, so the 50,000 dollar question is where do I go from here? I do not have access to any of my shop manuals so I am now at the proverbial brick wall. AL

This might sound stupid to you, but you need all the help you can get. Are you sure your gas gauge is working correctly? You might be out of gas with a lying gauge...
That's all I can come up with at this point!
Good luck-!

OK, time for some irrational digging!
Do you have an auto? - If so, try starting in in neutral - the contacts in 'park' may not be made, so it thinks it is in 'drive'.
That you have spark and a running fuel pump says the systems work - but says nothing about an intermittant fault. Common intermittant faults in our older cars are the ignition switch contacts and relays. Until the key switch actually dies, an intermittant can be shown by flicking the key back and forth to burnish the contact set. If that helps, replace.
On the 16v's relay swapping is not as easy - but some are identical except for the amperage rating - good enough for a trial. eg., XV intensive washer "may" swap for XVII fuel pump. The XVI fuel injection relay is also at the heart of this -'dunno if there is a swap for this.
Hope you have some spares ..

It's a 4 spd. auto. I checked the fp relay and it functions normally ie. on when starter is engaged. Which relay is for FI ? OH it is a 84 . I will try some of your sugestions and we'll see what happens? AL

If you have spark and fuel pressure, the most likely problem would be no injection - Relay XVI. If you jumper it, be aware that there are TWO 87 terminals that must be powered.

OK, WALLY YOU ARE THE MAN, made up a jumper and walla fired right off. my co-worker said either a bad diode or a crappy solder joint on the relay itself! BACK IN BIDNESS!!@!! THANK YOU ALL!!!
