Interesting footnote to the Calgary car with 15,000 miles...had died on the hiway...turned out the battery terminals were loose enough to pull them off and the air box and filter had a dead mouse in it and so much mouse crap, bedding and food that you couldn't see the folds in the air filter.

Just drive 'em! You've either got a sub 5k miler collectible you'll drive 100 miles/year or you'll have one like the rest of us: Eventual higher mileage and depreciating value. Nothing in beween!

Don't forget the twin-turbo '88 S4 5spd with just over 4,000 miles.

I deleted my posts because I get so sick of this kind of response to the type of thread Curt started. The topic has been posted before with virtually the same responses, probably from the same people.

I thought he asked "who's got the lowest miles" not for your opinion about what you think of low mileage cars and whether or not people with low mileage cars actually enjoy them.

Or, am I wrong.......

Better still buy an under used, molly coddled, over serviced, concours condition collectors piece for a small fortune, fit a set of Bilsteins and show it what it was really designed to do. My 95 GTS had done 36K when I bought it and looked like it lived in air conditioned museum. It's done more in the last 3 months in my hands than the last 5 years with the PO, and will average 20,000 miles a year from now on. Few teething problems through underuse but all sorted now. Feel like I've saved it - these cars are tools that need to be used.

Geez. I didn't mean to start a battle.
Different strokes/different folks and all that.

My shipping Dept Manager, Connie (whom many of you have met - she's the one holding up the coffe cup in the 928 Motorsports Coffee Cup Picture) has two show cars... A Camero RS/SS and a Corvette.

Her husband and her are Polishers. I'm a driver. They take their cars to a car show (and often win). I like to go to a track.

We have this little fun arguement all the time...

I have a '91 model that just turned 85k miles on the way home from Sharks at the Lake.

For myself, I am more along Chuck's philosophy, while I don't think it's wrong to drive them, either. They are able and made to be driven, but driving them causes wear and tear that very few people ever fix [and sometimes shortcuts are taken]. So it's nice to have some low mileage examples, that demonstrate how the 928 actually came from the factory.

I also disagree with those who advixe to avoid low mileage cars/. Sure, low mileage cars have their quirks, but what's easier to fix - a few quirks or leaks, or repaint the car and redo the interior? If you want a really nice 928 to enjoy, you will find that buying a low mileage example is a lot more feasible. On the other hand, if you want a daily driver, you are better off buying one that has been more than just previously owned and loved.

I drive my car occasionally only - maybe once a week on average. This allows me to appreciate it a lot more than if it was daily transportation. It also allows me to enjoy the car over a longer period of time. I've never been one to switch toys very often... [except the GT I had for 8 months only]

Chuck Z,

Relax. I just asked a question for those who do not drive their cars often. If you have a problem with that, oh well. I was not trying to insult you or anyone else, but I really wondered how much people who drive their car a few times a year actually enjoy it. I don't think he asked for your opinion of our opinion either.

To me its more interesting to see who has the highest milage cars, anyone can park them, its the ones who drive them and keep 'em running that is impressive to me..ie 225K cars.

That seems very enlightened coming from someone with 43k on their car, anyway I'd love to get my hands on a car as young as yours!

I drive mine, 35k in 3.5 years, 185k in total - and to think I was slightly apprehensive about buying a car with 150k on the clock.

....and in a few years at 20k per year it will be completely used up, like so many other 928s before it? Tired and worn out. Then what?

I like the thought of having a 928 to share with interested enthusiasts that's in much the same condition it was originally presented from the factory. Have you ever seen a completely original 1978 928 right down to the original tires? Recently? Not many people have, and I have one I'd like you to see. In a few years I'll ask you the same question about a 95 GTS.

I too feel like I saved ALL three of my current 928s. The blue 95 looked like it could have had 80,000 miles on it instead of 8,000. My 78 was well on the way to wasting away into a used up heap. A couple more years of treatment like it had gotten the last few and would have been a real mess not worthy of saving.

My most recent 95 GTS was well on it's way to becoming just another used up 928, tired and worn out. It required painting the front clip, rockers and bumper covers to make it visually presentable. The all leather interior was also in need of some tlc and the stereo had been butchered. Lots of $ to repair/rebuild correctly in fact, I've had it since Feb and it's still not ready for the road. But it will be soon and it will look great! This car will be the driver in the group, albeit probably much more limited use than most.

People get enjoyment from their 928s (cars in general for that matter) in many different ways. Some think you have to put a bazillion miles on them or you just don't (can't) get any satisfaction from owning them. Some have to build them in to monster street/track pounding racing machines to find fulfillment. Some just get off by having a super pristine example of an extinct car (right, that would be me). Doesn't make me right and it doesn't make any of the other groups right either. I know, its the nature of this type of forum to pound on someone you don't happen to agree with and I must tell you that is the part of 928 ownership I find the least enjoyable.

I happen to really like hearing about cars with low miles (I will also watch the highest mileage thread as that too interests me - I just don't have anything to post there) so, can we get back to the subject at hand?
