Maybe it's just Los Angeles, but checking for front plates is part of the parking enforcement's list of things to check as they drive along the side of the road. They get every car they come across. When my shop parked my car on the street, it had a pile of parking tickets for no plates. But when I park at home, it's no problem. Park in Hollywood. BAM! Tickets for no plate... There were motorcycle officers in Venice, pulling over every car they saw that had no plates. They just set up shop. One guy in the road, looking at cars, and waving offenders off the the side, and the other one on the side of the road writing the tickets... It *IS* a big priority in LA, due to the revenue the city is getting from the stoplight cameras...

I've been pulled over twice for it. I always keep my plate in the trunk. I told the officer "I'm very sorry, it fell off the other day. I can try putting it back on, but it will probably fall off again. Should I give it a try?" He said "Mr. Spiegle, get your plate fixed. Goodbye!"

I got one last year coming back from an ORR event. Also wrote me up for having lettering on
the windshield. My car already had the holes in the bumper, so I mounted the plate and removed
the windshield banner and got it signed off. Here's a shot for the last event (taken by Rich Sanders):
I'll probably take it off at the next event, since my tech speed will be 180 mph, and I don't want
to loose the plate...

we have to move our cars to the other side of the street every wednesday and thursday mornings, and let me tell you, i have had about 15-20 tickets since i moved here, about 5-6 of them for no front plate. $25 for no plate $45 for not waking up before 9 am to move my car. this is why I dont upgrade my car... all the money goes to tickets!!! I have dicovered that i can put the front plate against the windshield inside the car and I dont get a ticket, so its been months since ive recieved a plate ticket.
George, what kind of car is that behind you? is it a Koenigsegg CC V8S? The gaping hole in the side sure is ugly... But necessary I'm sure.

Chris,
It's a SSC Aero. They said it was one of 2 that they have made so far.
Of course, it's a little more tempermental then your regular street car. Here they
are pushing it to the starting grid, since it was overheating while idling.
For more info you could try these links:

It was the 2nd most interesting car at the 2005 Bonneville 100, the first was an
electric car that was trying to hit 300 mph.
Rich and I sat out Saturday morning in the cold waiting for them to make they're
run to take some photos, but they had "electrical" problems and postponed the
attempt until next year.

I had my 82 928 parked on the street in Beverly Hills, and went to see a client. I checked the hours of parking to make sure I was not in violation. When I returned, from a block away, I could see I had a ticket. I thought, damn, I know I didn't violate the parking times. When I looked at the ticket, it was for no front license plate. I gave up and put the front plate on

I was at Lowes the other day and they had a heavy duty magnet, maybe 3/4 X 2 X 11, to slap on the side of a toolbox and stick tools to. Perhaps it or other rare earth magnets could be mounted to the inside of the bumper cover and be strong enough to hold the plate. My experience with rare earth magnets tells me they are probably strong enough to make a plate hang on at speed.
or
Double sided adhesive tape of some sort.
or
Mounted low in front of the intake, mounted to a bracket from the actual, metal, bumper. Some loss of air flow.
Any one could give you the advantage of a plate mounted at a hard-to-read angle.

I went on a few trips to Los Angeles last year and a friend of mine said he got ticketed for not having one so I put mine on. He said LA was really cracking down. It doesn't look that bad IMHO.

No front plate is a violation in Maryland, and the cops can pull you over solely for not having a front plate on your car. I agree with the previous posts - the car looks so much better without a front plate, so I figured what's the worst thing that could happen if I'm pulled over for not having a front plate? I'll be very courteous, and tell the officer that the bracket is on backorder. I even printed a copy of the 928Intl. part description & picture & wrote backorder on it & kept it in my glovebox.
A few months back in downtown Bethesda (the restaurant/bar weekend destination) I was pulled over by a Montgomery Co. cop at about 1:30 am for not having a front plate. That was his exuse to pull me over, smell a few drinks on my breath, get me out of the car & give me the side-of-the-road sobriety test. Dammit. I passed, but what a pain in the ***.
Also, Washington DC, who will do anything to get revenue from MD & VA visitors, will issue a ticket for no front MD plate! It's $75 or so. It's none of their friggin business if I don't have a MD plate on my car, but tell that to the judge.
Sooo, I now reluctantly display my plate on the front of my car.
Maryland has an image of the state flag/crest between the three letters & three numbers. IMO, the MVA doesn't deserve to put the MD flag on my car, so, my way of subtly & discreetly getting back at MD.
Here's what the state crest looks like, and my solution is below:

I had no front plate when I got my speeding ticket on the way back from Sharktoberfest. The guy added it to the ticket. So I mounted it, took it to the local CHP and had an officer sign off on it. He was so excited about my car, it was incredible. I told him that I hate that front plae and that the screws that hold the plate to the bracket could easily puncture the bumper cover, if someone ever hits the plate. He told me that if it were him, he'd take it off again when I get home. Since that night my front plate has magically disappeared...
Try that in a place like Germany, where even crime is illegal!!!
