Lightweight hatch aquired
Yes, I had the hatch molds and end product made by a fiberglass fabricator, and I think they turned out pretty good. I decided to make the hatch as close to the original as possible, so that the hatch would be sealed along the stock rubber weatherseal - keep the rain out for us folks up here in the pacific north-wet. There was a bit of shrinkage at the bottom, but that can be resolved on the next run. It turned out very sturdy.
Not sure about price or availability yet - I'm waiting to hear how the Gnarly installation goes !!!
That hatch has an amazing amount of miles on it. It was taken from Victoria BC to Fontana in April, back to Seattle, then from Seattle to Portland in June. I hope it's not too beat up - travelling in race car haulers...
Two were made from the first run - one to Don and one on the blue car. I have it installed on the blue car now.
If you really Really REALLY want one:
For sale - fiberglass hatch - comes with already prepared track car...

Which reminds me - I took all the race decals and numbers off the car - I should update that site a bit...
I saw the product at Fontana awhile back ... looked "beefy". I guess you could cut the weight in half and it would work fine.
I hope it is not so "cheap" that the guy just decides that it is now worth the effort to either do it right or do it at all.
Cause I want one! Sign me up Dean!

Let's wait for the feedback on the Gnarly install - good bad and ugly, and take it from there.
The racers want just a thin wafer of a shell, the street/performance folks want something light, functional, and stealth. to start the protos were built strong first, and it's a light and very strong piece! If made super trick, the price would be super trick, so I'm thinking to keep the price reasonable, for a reasonable piece.
It's strong - Don drove it from Portland to Lyle-land, strapped to the roof racks on his VW bug - travelling over 140 MPH!!! Babes going wild, it was mayhem!
That last paragraph reminds me I shouldn't post when I'm tired...
PS - Don - how was your race? Mine sucked - I was having a GREAT race - firmly in 2nd in my class - 3S. Made an overly aggressive manuever to overtake a 2R car in T1, because the door was opened for me by the 2R car which appeared to be opening the slot for me because I was a comin' into T1, but then the door closed suddenly and painfully by the 2R car, minor contact, and I was handed a 13/13. Gotta stick with the spirit of PCA - it was overly aggressive of me. I'll post the vid. No damage to either, just contact, but that's all it takes.
Hmmm Dude .. I had heard about the excellent weed up there. Never could I have imagined ...

I would also be interested in the hatch since I was just about to replace my glass with lexan. I had toyed with the idea of getting one made with vacuum formed carbon fiber/kevlar like the sunroof panel I had made but decided against it since the cost would not support many sales. I'm sure your man can do a wet layup with c-fiber/kevlar for a bit more than f-glass. Be interesting to see the price difference. I was also thinking of mounting the hatch with four pins and no hinges or shock since I only rarely have to go into the rear for anything on my track car. This would enable the racer version to be a mere shell and the outer rim can be bult up with some closed cell foam to seal it. Just a thought.
And why the switch to the 911? I thought you were doing really well with your 928 in the races. Is the 911 working out better for you?
Cheers,
Constantine
