New 911 owner praises 928
I had a great experience today. Going to pick up my new super swank bicycle, I caught up to a 03 or 04 911 Carrera. Very nice. Road goes from 1 to 2 lanes, as I'm pulling by I give him the thumbs up, and he gave me what I took for a half hearted," sure, you have a Porsche" one in return.
How wrong I was. I had me windows down since my A/C doesn't work ( being fixed as we type!), and after he passed me up again, I see his window go down. We pull up right next to each first in line at the next stop, and he turns and starts telling me that he had an '84 928 about 10 years ago, and that it was the best car he had ever had. Best purchase he had made, and selling it was the worst decision he'd ever made. Told me to never get rid of mine.
I offered to trade at this point, , but he declined, said he wanted to stick with his manual tranny.
Anyway, cool guy, and another fan of the 928, so it was a neat little experience. We shot the breeze about the 928 for a couple more seconds, then the light changed. We didn't race, I would have been smoked anyway, and we parted ways a few miles later with a wave.

Nothing unusual about Carrera owners having a high regard for the 928......I have said so, many times myself......

I think it's unusual. Just about every 911 guy I know barely acknowledges the existence of the 928. It's not that they hate it; they just don't have any interest whatsoever.

You and the unnamed gentleman are the unusual subset of Carrera owners who have also owned/own a 928.
I also got a tootle from a 944 in return to my wave a few days ago.
Another thing I really like about a Porsche. I don't even bother in my Saab, there's a about a bazillion of those around here - my arm would fall off from waving, and I never get any sort of acknowledgement. I'm 2 for 2 in the last week in the 928, and even got a wave back on my bicycle from the "thumbs up" I gave to a 928.
Who said Porsche owners are rude?

And remember, both of those (and really any Italian word that finishes with an e) end with an "ay". Unless you say Porsh, you philistines.

Is that so... hmmm. OK guess I gotta take your word for it.

I have had people chat with me in convenience stores, banks, and on the job where they mention the 928 as their favorite, or that Michael Schumacher ( I think thats who they mentioned) said once in an interview that it was his favorite car to own and drive other than his work car. I have driven 911's and this car, and the 911 is not a comfortable pleasure to drive, it is a fantastically responsive car, and with the right conditions will get you through the twisties with a full skull grin on your face, but its work. The 928 on the otherhand, particularly the models with the proper large motors and the manual tranny, are a comfortable, unchallenging, joy to drive. Want to drift the backend out? Its an option. On the 911 its almost a requirement and something that normally surprises its owner.
I once went into a clover leaf ramp with a 911 on the outside of the turn. He lost it. Car slid out from under him, back end caught the grass, kicked back around, I pulled back and came to a stop and when I got stopped he was in my lane, facing me, and I think he got very lucky to not have hit anything. He looked rather annoyed, and while I realize it was not a good driver for the 911, it is a challenging car to drive hard and properly. It had paper tags in the window, and the dealer was a block or so ahead of us.
Another difference between the 928 and the 911 is the 928's sharability. If I were married I would not mind the wife taking the 928 out for a drive, while with the 911 I would first want her to take a road racing school and show me she can handle its characteristics in the rain. (Ladies I am not being sexist, but the women I date seem to be barely able to navigate from home to anything but a shopping mall and they are less than confident drivers. They like to go fast, but they get on the brakes after they realize the turn is sharper than the expected. So while you may be good drivers, the ones I have met are not.) It has a lot of power, and a lot of weight way out back. Even the 928 can be touchy, but far less so than the 911.
On my motorcycle, a ZX-11, I got playful with a 3.6 turbo 911 once on another cloverleaf. The run started out with a mustang but we lost him by second gear (this started at a light). We took the ramp somewhere around 90, his back end was out about 20 degrees, ramp was clear to the highway, and I was tucked up next to him. We kept at it up to around 160. This was the first car that I had seen with 1) a good driver capable of holding such a drift throughout the turn in a car I know is challenging to drive, and 2) had the power to keep up with the bike. So I do like the 911's, but I thoroughly enjoy my 928 for its good manners and playful spirit. Despite its 23 years or so of age, it still likes to play on occasion.

I owned my 1990 911 C-2 Cab with Tiptronic for about 5 years. Although very responsive & a blast to drive, no doubt you are correct about it being much less forgiving & requiring more attention with the weight in the rear. Many less experienced 911 drivers do exactly what was described, get into a turn too hot, try to scrub speed with the brakes, the weight shifts even more to the front & here comes the rear end flying past them! I know cause it happened to me once in the rain, even without applying the brakes(Never in the rain cause all bets are off when the road is wet!).
I have only owned my Shark for 10 months & somehow I already love it more than my C-2 Cab. Not quite sure exactly why, maybe a variety of reasons. My 911 was an awesome car & was definatlely a head turner too, I'm sure more so than my 928. My 928 is more comfortable. I like it best maybe cause there are hardly any on the road. I see a 911 of some sort several times a week, yet dont see another 928 but once every few months at best. I enjoy driving my 928 more, not that cat like quickness of the 911, more brute strength though. How can you not love the 50/50 weight ratio?? The little mods I have done to my Shark, there are 100 more I want to do, after learning from all of you here on Rennlist of course!
Most 911 owners are sincerely nice, I had one in a 996 give me an energetic return wave the other week. I've found with the Porsche owner wave, that I've had no better or worse response when I was in my 911 than when I am now in my 928. Seems more Boxster owners are oblivious to your acknowledgement than any others. Perhaps they just arent aware of the Porsche tradition yet.
My eye doc is a big car guy, more of the American Muscle cars though. He likes to rib me & tell me the joke, "Whats the difference between a Porcupine & a Porsche owner?".... answer..."With the Porcupine, the ***** is on the Outside!" ha ha... not true in my book! Think you can have a jerk or a nice person, no matter what they drive! I say most Porsche owners are great people, car lovers to the core, whether they are in 914 or a Carrera GT! Just ask them about their car. Maybe thats it, sometimes we want to tell everyone about OUR car & someone might seems uninterested, Just ask them about THEIR car & see how friendly they get!
