Thank John and Jim... Finally the definitive answer of NO.

regarding the gas mileage... if you don't change your driving style post-SC install, you'll obviously get lower gas mileage. If you car feels faster, that's because you have the ability to use more gas and make more power.

There was an experiment by Porsche on the 928 engine in the mid 1980 to reduce fuel comsumption.

They divided the V8 into effectively two V4 engines, each with its own inlet plenum/runners. The idea was of course to shut down half the engine at low load levels. As the load increased, the other "engine" was activated.

They grouped the cylinders as 1,7,6,4 and 3,2,5,8. The engine was of course a 16v at this time. They had a system of variable throttle opening on the unused bank to reduce pumping losses.

This is explained in the book by Jerry Sloniger "Porsche 928 928 944" page 157. This book was published by Ospray Publishing in London. It is now out of print, I think.

John that is similar to the "Popular Mechanics" VW boxer engine/ air compressor where you use two cylinders as an engine and two cylinders as an air compressor.
