I'm looking to remove my smog pump system, but don't understand what good does pumping air to the rear of the cams do? I thought it would pump air to the air inlet pipe on the catalytic converter. I guess it doesn't really matter, but it makes no sense to me.

I deleted my smog pump. It didn't pump air anywhere but to the cat converter (also deleted). What model year do you have?

84 Euro, no cats. I dont see how the air pump can get any air to the catalytic converter the way it's set up. It pumps air to the back of the cams housing. How does this get to the cat?

I think there's a port in the back of the heads that leads to the exhaust ports. I assume that's what you're refering to. Pumping air into the exhaust will tend to reduce NOx even if there's no cat, but it's not as effective.

The early cars pumped into a passage side the heads which is internally connected to the 8 individual ports.
