Door Panel Storage Bin Question
I'm in the middle of repairing the driver's door interior panel and have come across an interesting problem. The panel has been off the car several times in the past...I've had it of 3 or 4 times myself...and it needs some minor structural repairs to the mounting points (clips need to be replaced, some of the bolt holes in the armrest need reinforcing) and the moisture shield is missing. The carpet was replaced some time back as well and was generally well done. But there are is one troubling problem I've run across.
The plastic "bucket" that forms the storage bin is held in place with staples around it's perimeter that pierce through the fibreboard panel...the type that splay outwards. Problem is that the ones at the bottom of the bin were removed to assist the recarpeting, but not reinstalled. It seems that these have to be installed before the carpet is glued on, as the carpet covers the sharp end of the staples.
My dilemma now is what to do to fix this up. Removing the carpet is the obvious move, but it is unlikely I can do this without destroying it or the panel. That will mean a new door carpet piece to restall (which will be expensive and likely not match the rest of the car). The bin cannot be glued to the panel, as there is a loose vinyl sheet between these pieces. I cannot see a way to stple through all this stuff and hid the sharp ends with the carpet intact. Just wondering anyone else has faced this problem and found a solution.
This is a leather panel that's in very good shape...replace the entire piece is not in my budget either. Any help appreciated.

Steve,
you don't have to attach it to the panel... it will hold with the 2 mounting screws, it's a PITA for 1 person to get it on that way, but if you have another set of hands around you can get it on without much trouble..

From what I can see, you only need to deal with three corners. Two of them are low enough not to be seen onless you actually look for them In that situation I'd consider a very careful pop riveting. Then I'd cut some carpet fibers and glue them to the rivets to conceal the repairs.

You're right, the issue is not securing the bin to the door...the bolts hold it on fine. And the clips hold the panel to the door, so this may not be as big an issue as I thought. Thanks for the sanity check.

Yes, this was sort of the direction I was leaning. I was thinking of stapling instead of the rivets, but the concept would be the same. The rivet idea would be easier to hide and more secure...the staple more OEM. I'll have to do some experinmenting to see what works best. Thanks for the tip.
