Question Questions regarding new shocks, install S4 upgrade?

I'll be needing new front shocks for the 1980 928. Currently, it has Bilstien shocks. My question is, should I just stick with what I have and order new Bilstien shocks, or install S4 adjustible front springs with new Boge shocks? I believe they will install in the 1980 without any necessary mods. Anybody done this....Kibort?

I have a set of S4 springs with old Boge shocks in the garage, so for about the price of 1 Bilstien shock, I can get 2 new Boge shocks to put in the S4 springs. Is this a good idea or not? The car is used mainly for normal driving, with a couple Open Road Races each summer. So is the adjustible S4 springs with new Boge's an upgrade or downgrade compared to stock 1980 non-adjustable springs with Bilstiens? Also, what is the difference between gas and oil shocks?

Let me know your thoughts/experience/etc.

Thanks,

Rich

Are the Bilsteins dead? If so, generally, they can be rebuilt by Bilstein at ~ 1/2 the price of new - as can Konis. Your rears must be adjustable, so that leaves the issue of the fronts: new Bilstein fronts have threaded bodies - and 'may' come with nuts and perches - the suppliers will speak to that.
I installed the springs, adjusters and perches of an '85S on my '80 wrapped over Koni Gas shocks: best mod I ever did - installed the same Konis on the S4!
Your S4 set up will fit the '80 - and work with either Boge or Koni: Bilstein bodies are of smaller diameter and are directly threaded for adjuster nuts.

Both Boge and Bilstein use oil as the damping agent. It's rate of flow is limited by valves. The gas is used to elevate the internal pressure so that the oil does not bubble foam as easily when working hard. The new Bilsteins are all height adjustable and while you are in there how about some Eibach/928 International springs ?

My buddy's 85 euro had original Bilsteins that had blown seals. We sent them to Bilstein in CA and for about $270 they came back rebuilt and work excellent.
Well worth it anyways.
