Default Overheating Update

A while back I asked for some help on an overheating problem I have on my '79. Just as an FYI data point, the problem was a seized water pump. The timing belt was running over a non-rotating pully and shreading itself to death. I don't know how often this happens; I've never heard of it before, hence this post.

Good update Art. Should my car overheat I will keep in mind that this could be a symptom.

Art:

Do you know where that water pump is from, and approximately how old it is in terms of years & mileage?

Also makes me wonder if a PO replaced the timing belt without replacing the WP, rollers, tensioners, etc.

Could be - but if one turns their own wrenches, I would only replace a pump that is showing signs of wear via lack of smoothness in the bearing, etc. The pump that catastrophically failed on my S4 appeared to have been recently installed with a correctly tensioned new belt ( which I confirmed when receiving the car) by a Porsche dealer. - and the car only had 55 KKm total (~33K miles). So, a new ( or rebuilt) pump may be no better - or not as good as the one replaced.
By contrast, the pump on my rev happy '80 is original ..
If paying someone $2k for a TB job, the pump cost is of little consequence - so it is a judgment call: is the rebuilt better than what is installed?
