Default Play in steering

I have some play in my steering , when I'm driving I can move the wheel about 1 inch without it steering the car, just one inch of free play in the steering, I dont mean the steering wheel is loose in the column. Its like driving an old ford or something, is there a way to take up the slack like you could do on american cars and trucks?

No way to take up the slack that I'm aware of except to find out why there's slack and fix it. It could be the rack, tie rod ends, bearings or even suspension parts. I suggest you jack the car up, have someone hold the steering wheel, and the pull on the wheels at 3 and 9 o'clock. You should feel slop. Then look to see where the slop is coming from and go through a process of elimination. Better to do it sooner than later IMHO. BTW, it might be a combination of things like bearings and tie rod ends, so don't be surprised.

There's a rubber flex disc in the steering shaft ( and two universal joints) that can be added to the list of rack bushings, ....

I had the same concern. I have talked to Dave Roberts (of 928 Specialists) and He said 1% is normal. It appears that 1" play is normal. Going to 14: wheel will help but not much. That is what I get geometrically:
