Thumbs down

Frankly, I don't see how they can call this a "successor" to the 928. It may have a front engine V8 but thats it, and thats just not enough.

Yuck! Porsche should stick to 2-door models (that means killing the Cayenne too).

The Cayenne has been way too successful for them. It brought the soccer moms into the P-car family when they couldn't get the kids into the 996 or 986. Sales have been fantastic in the U.S. Probably why there's talk of a 4-door. I'm with you on the "yuck". The only thing that looks Porsche is the front bumper. The rest looks like an Infinity or Acura.

I don't know why they would call it a "successor" to the 928. Only thing similar to the 928 is it's a hatchback and a front V8. I hope they don't advertise it that way. Sure would give the 928 a bad name.

I think the Cayenne may end up being an albatross around the neck of Porsche. Sales are off 40%:

Uhm...I like it. I think if they didn't compare it to a 928, some of us wouldn't be offended. Looks like a high speed 4 door touring car that will eat the Autobahn for breakfast. Similiar to the BMW 745IL, but I expect the P car would run circles around the Bimmer. The interior would probably be so hi tech Euro with incredible comforts, to "kick it" in the back seat while the German country side flies by at a blur.

Yea, I'd own one!

...and look at the front brake concept, the caliper wraps about a 1/4 of the way around the rotor....geeez.

Well the cayenne went down, but 911's went up and overall is about the same.....there is a reason why Porsche is the most profitable car maker out there....but 4 door SUV's make good profits, but hurt your image? How much is your image worth? Personally I don't like the 4 door....looks like a melted Cayenne.

It's not a REAL porsche, it doesn't have a rear mounted air cooled boxer, er, I mean a front engine water cooled, er, I mean it's not like, uh,-------
If Porsche builds it it will be a Porsche and will be, at the VERY least, an interesting car. And yes, it looks like A CAR!!

I think that's because SUV sales are off in general due to gas prices. When the Cayenne first came out it was touted as the saviour of Porsche since their sales had slumped so badly before that.

I bet they're trying to deal with the gas prices by getting into the small but big market. Get a little more gas mileage and still have room for the 2.47 kids. But seriously, who in the world is it that can pay the $125-175 grand for the car but not afford the gas? And why would you pay that much for a car that looks like everything else on the road?

They need to be careful. If a Porsche isn't "special" any more they'll lose their base enthusiasts that keep coming back. A Porsche is not supposed to be a "practical" car, it's a car you enjoy being in every day because of the way it drives or a way to deal with your mid-life crisis.

"Computer Enhanced Photo" indeed. "Enhanced" as in completely fabricated, I'm guessing.

"The roof is tall for easy entry and exit" - doesn't look all that tall in the photo.

"Trademark cues include Carrera GT-type headlamps" - looks like 997 headlights, not CGT.

"a four-light boomerang greenhouse" - I see a three-light greenhouse.

"to avoid that slouchy SUV/wagon look" - anyone else notice that the description sounds an awful lot like a MINIVAN??? Or maybe a crossover like the Pacifica or upcoming Mercedes B-class?

I sure hope I'm wrong...

My 1982 928 is a perfect example of what happens to your business when you modify your product to accomodate a market dynamic that is outside of your control namely, the price of gas! Porsche held back through 82 and the result is a dog (comparatively of course ).

But it was a dog by Porsche standards. They comprimized the Porsche brand all in the name of fuels prices. The market picked up on this and the 928 never received the attention it should have. People who dirve porsches are not overly concerned with gas prices. If they are, they should be buying a Lexus, not a Porsche.

As for this new car. I like it. It's different. It doesn't look like a Bimmer or any other vehicle on the market today, yet looks like a Porsche. In time people will come to like it and hate it the same. It would have been fun to have had forums like this back when the 928 was released. How many people do you think rolled over on that one? The 928's eventual dimise was an affirmation for those that hated it, and a crusifiction for those of us who love it. In either case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

If the performance of this new vehicle is on par or better than Porsche's other current offerings and they put some marketing muscle behind it, it may have a chance to succeed. However if they use the "if you build it, they will come" model. It will die a slow death not unlike the 928.

In the end, it's all about the marketing.
