I think Ron H. is right on this one... it was cars like the 924 and 944 that allowed Porsche to continue making the 911 during the 80s and 90s. Similarly, we need these SUVs and maybe even these sedans to allow Porsche to stay profitable and cutting-edge. They are what make great cars like ours possible.

Great point Ron. I just hope they don't start doing like the Detroit Big 3 by taking one model and branding it two or three times. I think the Cayenne is the best looking/performing SUV out there, but the first word when it came out was it was a Toureg with a Porsche badge. Thank God that turned out not to be true, but it's one of the things about the American car companies that just doesn't make sense to me, but then I'm cheap.

Oddly,

It was the Toureg that got top honors in the SUV fight when it came out. Yet again... not a bad thing.
Its just a simple exchange... Porsche pushes down the price range some technology in exchange gets some items that will cost less keeping the prices of their cars from going into beyond a common mans reasonable ability to purchase one in his (or her) life.
Let face it Porsches are not cheap to buy or maintaine... but every Porsche is a Porsche, and they are not so damn expensive that a common man can actually dream of owning one... I think that is why they are cherished.

John..."but the first word when it came out was it was a Toureg with a Porsche badge. Thank God that turned out not to be true, " you might want to look into the base model V-6 Cayenne just a bit closer before you make that statement

I agree. The only thing I don't like on these are the lights (head and tail). They should have smoothed them off with cowls, a la Jag E-type Mk1, like the racer. As it is they spoil the otherwise beautiful lines (as do some of the shutlines, but not as obviously). Didn't know they were using BMW V8's, just the 6's. That's interesting considering Morgan is doing the same thing with the Aero 8 and new Aero Max (which may now go into limited production).

Is that the one they were talking about in the couple of articles I read? All of the Cayennes I see running around are V8 or Turbo, I didn't know they really were playing American over there.

Gentlemen,
Variety is the spice of life. Some like the double D’s, some like the long legged. If Porsche only built 911 then we would not be here with our 928's. I was a kid in 77 when I was a 928 and knew then I wanted one. Porsche is a Porsche is a Porsche. One day when I have kids I will get a Cayenne and not a Buick mini van. I have seen the cayenne play on the street and it can corner hard and move. If money was not an option I would start with a 356 and work my way to the new 4 door.

All the models are great.

..Oh...the many flavors of ice cream...but this is no 928 successor. However, it's not bad for an oversized Japanese family sedan with a very expensive badge

I may agree that it is not a successor to the 928, but to call it an oversized Japanese family sedan without seeing it in person or driving it or giving a fighting chance? What kind of comment is that? This is the same mentality that can't recognize the Cayenne Turbo for the incredible vehicle that it is.

BTW I never knew Porsche to be a cheap badge.

Amen! I agree.
Let's hope that Porsche doesn't continue the path of creating new cars from the molds of other, previous models. I'm not one to buy something just because everyone else does. I want something different. I want something unique.

Whether Porsche knows what they're doing is up for debate, but you have to give them credit for trying different styles and markets. That's how they've gotten to where they are. If they have to create a slick sedan to increase revenue, so be it! Let more people drive various Porsches and let the world enjoy well-engineered vehicles. At least it will gain more exposure to Porsche, which will hopefully educate more to what a great car the 928 is/was.

The Cayenne will grow on you. To-date, there just hasn't been any attractive SUV's. Everyone is making them now...most are raddy, slow, and very top-heavy. IMHO, Porsche and BMW probably have the best looking SUV's, with Lexus close behind. The Cayenne is a beautiful machine inside the cockpit and it's performance is impressive as well.......I just can't afford two P-cars.
