Default 18" Carrera 5-spoke wheels

Anyone running with 18" Carrera 5-spoke wheels? I love the looks and I was thinking of getting a set. I was just wondering if they were too big for our cars. The offsets are 50 front and 65 rear. I searched the archives and didnt see much there.

Hi,

I have tried them on my former 928 S4 model 88'.
They came from a 996 in 7,5 and 10 x 18" with 225 and 285 x 18 and looked awesome on that shark!
28mm-spacers for the rear axle required on both sides to fill the fender :-)).
No spacers on the front needed.
No fender contact in the front although the car was lowered 30 mm with TechArt springs front and rear.
Also really no space problems.
Much better grip and improved handling of the car in compatison with the original 16".
These set up is just like made for the 928.
It is a pitty that I don't have any photos of the car with the 18"s.

Put them on and enjoy !!

Cheers
Stefan

I actually did some checking on these and the fitment is a little "iffy" and not optimum for the 928.

HOWEVER, with the set up of the new 997's, the offsets are closer to the 928 and here is a wheel that will fit great and looks like it is strong enough to hold up a 928 as the spokes are a bit thicker...997 Carrera III's

and the chromed version...

I actually had a set on my 93 GTS and they rubbed in the front. Looked great but they rubbed. Like the 997 wheel....

Looks of wheels aside.... since the 928's weight is well-balanced from front to rear optimum overall balance is maintained with a front tire section width close-to or the same as the rear. A "911" fitment of 225s in front and 285+ in the rear will - IMHO - increase the 928's understeer.

The best 'handling money' I've spent on my GT was moving from 225/245 to 255/265.
To each their own though.

The 997 wheel looks very nice, but the point about understeer is right on. These cars understeer already, so adding more grip at the rear without increasing the fronts will make it worse. I have 255/35/18's on front and 295/30/18's in the rear on Fikse FM-10's. The car is handles like it is on rails and very neutral in the corners. Unfortunately, that means 3 piece custom offset wheels ($$$$).

Hope that helps.

For my GT I went with 9x and 10x17 Fikses from 928 Specialists. In the 17" diameter D.R. has a really good price. 18-inch 3-piece gets wicked pissah expensive fast. But, for street driving in the Northeast 18" wheels are too much IMHO. I'll bet (a beverage) that new 17" Fikses (3-piece forged) can be had for the same or less than new 18" Porsche wheels.

Dave,

I hear you on the 18" wheels. I needed the extra width due to the SC. Anyone without a SC, stroker, etc. will not need the larger 18" sizes. Even with the 295's, I can melt the rears at will.

Oops. Just noticed - you're in the NE Watch out for those pot holes!!!

I actually keep the 16" rims on most of the time. That extra sidewall is a good thing around here.

Do you need to go to 18" diameter now to get an 11" or 12" wheel now? Way back when, Fikse would build you a 17x12" if you wanted one. But D.R.'s 'deal' on Fikse's only goes to 10.

I would think that extra give from the taller sidewall might actually help with traction. I dunno. Guess I'll just have to get me one adem dare SuperCharger thingies and find out

How would wider rear tires cause the FRONT tires to have less grip ? If the front end currently washes out first the traction available has been exceeded and the car understeers the rear ALREADY has more traction so adding more rear traction should have little effect on when the front end understeers. BUT with more potential rear traction you should be able to get on the gas sooner and harder in a corner for better exit speeds before inducing power oversteer( IE drifting ) Plus some of the "understeer" people experience may be a direct result of trying to apply the brakes and corner at the same time. Like Oh My that corner is tighter than I thought front tires are squealing ....I better slow down .. Yow that really made it worse ! step on the brakes harder.............Officer ,the car just plowed off the road...there was nothing I could do !

ok....now I need a refresher course in Understeer & Oversteer.... thought I knew what Oversteer was pretty well... had that happen(least I thought that was what it was) once when my 911 decided to walk on the wild side in a turn on an interstate on ramp!!

I just put a set of the 16" C-2 Five Spoke Wheel from a 1990 911 on my 928, same wheel I used to have on my 1990 C-2 cab when I had it and I liked how it looked. Problem may be the front.... was told they were 7" fronts & 9" rears & they are actually 6" & 8's!! Has 205/55's up front & 225/45s in the rear. Dave Martin at Wheel Enhancement told me that I would be ok, but that I would experience some Understeer due to the narrow width of the front wheel, but should not be any safety concerns. I think I am already planning to find a pair of matching 8"'s for the front if I can find them economically!

Also,... here is a pic I took today of what I believe is the 18" Carrera III 5 Spoke wheel on a 911. I like the look of that wheel alot, think it'd look sharp on a 928!
