Default Paint advice

I've attached a picture of the 928 I'm considering buying. The body is in excellent shape, except for the passenger side door, which seems a different color. I think there is some sort of problem with the clear coat maybe. If this is indeed the issue, what needs to done to correct the problem. Will the entire door need to be stripped and repaint/clear coated, or can something simpler (less expensive) be done?

Thanks in advance.

That door was re painted at some point. The clear coat ages different than the rest of the car. I think, re painting the door with the proper paint and clear coat is the only solution here.

Brett,

bear in mind that silver and light blue are extremely difficult to match and very easy to notice even subtle differences in hue.

Getting that to match is going to be difficult, but not impossible.

Nice ride!

It will need to be painted and the paint needs to be color matched by a good paint store. First they make the recipe then test paint a piece of metal and compare to the gas fill lid (if it matches the car well ) then adjust the seasonings to get it closer to the current faded color of the bulk of the car. As mentioned silver can be tough to match. Often they will blend in the color and paint on the 1/4 and fender to make the door mismatch less obvious which ultimately means 1/2 the car may be slightly off and fade at a different rate. My old very brown 1980 is partly factory, partly resprayed ( faded ) and partly clear coated which is NOT original and peeling.

If it was a Taurus, I'd tell you to find a junkyard door to match. A definite possibility, considering how long PORSCHE paint lasts.

Paint matching on just a single panel is difficult. You will probably have to repaint the right side and blend color into the fender and q panel and maybe the roof and then clear all the panels. Often clearing a panel will change the color also because there is no such thing as a true "clear"

What year is the car?

It's a 1990. The owner says it has never been hit or wrecked and the title
shows nothing, but ....

I'm starting to think that maybe it was repainted early, as someone
suggested. Maybe due to damage during delivery or something.

Could be, when mine was repainted the shop found the passenger rear quarter had been worked on .... I couldn't see it but I guess thats why you have a trained eye. Anyway he suggested it could have been done pre-delivery.

But something has sure been done to the door of that 90, even to an untrained eye. Find a good body shop, I bet they can match the door, even if not perfect a LOT better than shown above.

If that is the only issue with the car ..... and the price is right .... even a top $$ paint job on the door not gonna cost more than 1K.

I haven't had the PPI yet, but the rest of the body/paint is excellent. Interior is excellent. Runs excellent. No leaks, noises. Very well maintained.

The owner did say the dealer gave him $10k off the list price of $72k when he bought it new, so maybe there was something there...

The PO of my car was able to get a similar $10k reduction from list. Car was a Dec '88 build, Aug '89 original sale. Late season, "clear 'em out" deal I guess. Such a far cry from the first couple 928 years, when a hefty deposit might get you a spot on the waiting list for one. I think the Honda Accord was selliing the same way...

On the paint: Take it to a good body/paint shop as part of your PPI. They will let you know quickly if it can be fixed with a little work just on the door, or whether more effort will be needed.

I used to tell myself that owning black cars was the answer to touch-up and panel-paint issues. Hey, black is black, right? Learned my lesson... Still better than any red, or the metallic colors. I just don't see myself driving a white car just to make paint matching easier, although Karen believes that white is the only color her cars will ever come in. Maybe that will keep her from stealing my next car if it's dark...

Brett,
Is it a GT, or did someone put GT wheels on an automatic?

Those wheels were an option for the S4. I'm not sure if I like them though. I've seen much more attractive wheels on 928's.

Not a bad idea to check around first......you might find an original door with original paint that might match it exactly. Then your pretty much back to an original car with original paint.......in a roundabout way.

This might be your best solution:

Hopefully the door is intact.
