Default Shifting an automatic...

I have an 83 with auto trans.

Since purchasing I have:
Changed air and fuel filter
Done WP/TB
Adjusted throttle cable

I tried testing my 0-60 myself...ugh over 10 sec.

I was in "D" the whole time.

Tonight I tried it from "2" to "3"

Roughly 8 sec. looking at my stopwatch and driving at the same time.

Question:
When the factory 7.2 sec was calibrated, how was it shifted? Is that in "D" or with upshifting?

Needless to say, I am dropping a gear to pull on the highway from now on.

Your kickdown switch/bowden cable might not be working properly. Was the trans shifting at redline while in "D"? I haven't tried any 0-60 runs shifting manually...since "D" shifts right at redline every time...thats hard to beat!!

Not sure on your car so ask before you try this. On my car dropping the lever into second before taking off from a stop starts the car in 1st gear. Accelerate and at chosen rpm move lever up one notch to 3rd gear position and immediately after you feel the car shift return the lever to second. This holds car in second gear until you decide to shift into third. At that time once again move lever into third and car will shift into third gear and stay there until lever is moved into "D" which shifts into 4th. Not sure if this works with 3 speeds. Makes the car a whole lot more fun to drive.

I believe all AT 928's were designed to start in 2nd gear unless you manually drop the shift lever into "2" - in which case the tranny starts in first........ Don't ask.

Also, if you really tromp on it, the tranny is supposed to know to shift down to first, even if you're in D. However, I presume that would take a few precious milliseconds while the computer thinks about it.

Are you holding the car with the brakes while revving the engine up to at least somewhere around 1500 rpm before launch?

My GTS/AT will hit redline in first and automatically shift to second even when I leave the shifter in "2." Then I have to manually make the shift from second to third. I've read on this forum that this shifting pattern is not normal. But I don't want to change it, cuz it gives me quicker acceleration than starting out in "2" then shifting to "3" and immediately back to "2" to get into second gear. I just let mine shift from first to second all by itself.

My car also makes the shift from 1st to 2nd by itself at 6500 rpm...to high for me. In the testing for the mag I work with we found redline isnt always the best shift point. Many times the best shift point is before redline but without the computers to check it is best to use the assometer.

If I tromp on it in "D" the car will shift somewhere around 3500 rpms. I never go redline in "D" no matter what....

It was somewhat embarassing to follow a Cavalier on an on ramp today knowing I wasn't going to be able to blow him away in "D"

Also, in "D" I am getting ALL my power at 60+ mph.

Kickdown switch/bowden cable.....to the manuals, I guess.

Ok, the bowden cable is loose, but the car is too hot to try it tonight.

Could it be in more of a pain in the a$$ position?
