Hey Chris I found this on Nichol's site about the cam plugs:

http://www.nichols.nu/tip341.htm

I really think that it's those plugs that the oil was coming out from. Again, is this the PITA also?

I think the 84 is a little different but I am no expert, applying Yamabond (or some other sealant) to the camplugs might be a good idea.

I was just thinking about applying a gasket sealant on those end plugs too after I take them out and replace them. The procedures are very different for 16 valve cars. They don't seem to have procedures on how to do the 32 valve 928s. I remember doing a rear cam seal on my 1984 944 once the same way they are stating on there. Never got my mits on the 32 valve engine hence my worry as to what I'll be getting myself into.

The cam bores are machined all the way thru the head. Look at the front of the cylinder head, and find the two cam plugs there. The ones on the rear are exactly the same, except that both shafts are capped off. The earlier cars had a plastic cap with an integral attach point for the bolt, and an O-ring seal. This was replaced on the later cars with a round rubber-coated plug, and a separate arm for the attaching bolt. If your car has the old-style plugs, you will need either to find a new O-ring for them, or you will need to buy new-style plugs and the attaching arms. Again, look at the front cam plugs to see what you have, and to get an idea of what you will be doing.

You can change the cam plugs without pulling the cam covers. Access is tight, but it can be done. Gearwrenches would probably be a big help.

Check our web site for the parts and prices.

Wally I just placed an order for the updated plugs through my buddy's shop. I can get them tomorrow afternoon at the latest and have them in hopefully this weekend. This will narrow down the leak to a valve cover. I'm still waiting on those gaskets I ordered What I deserve for not going through the Big 3

what's BTDT mean? I'll give you a ring as soon as all my parts come in. You're more than welcome to come on over and give us a few pointers. It was great learning from the previous project you helped us with So far I'd say the most disconcerting thing about the job would be removal and assembly of the passenger valve cover after replacing the seal seeing that the breather is right there Everything go well on your trip there Bill???

EDIT: sorry, check the PM instead whenever you're free there Bill

BTDT=been there, done that! Got your p.m. and replied. Passenger side valve cover just takes patience. Don't mind helping out at all, just keeps me sharp for when all the same $hit starts happening on mine

Had a good trip, got fried Saturday (ouch!), and soaked yesterday. I kept it respectable, co-driver trophied and made the challenge round. She kicked a$$!

see the oil pooled in the lower part of the cam plug in the pic above..in general, thats the origin of your oil leak i think.

When those plugs warp and go bad the may fall out or the pins may become dislodged from the holes...this allows oil to freely pass and thus may cause a LOW oil pressure at idle.

Andy.
I have had no need to take the cam towers off nor the end covers, however there have been some excellent replies and photographs of what to look for and how to do it.

I did a quick check of the PET5 for the 87 S4 compared to my 90 S4 and the parts are the same, so based on my experience doing all my own work on my 928 for the last 5 and a half years and being an engineer to boot if have ventured my technical advice.

If you are doing the cam shaft end covers only and renewing the O-rings then there should be no problems except it will be a bit tight, however, if you need to do the cam tower gaskets etc., then WYAIT you can check the rubber inserts at the end of the cam shafts to ascertain their condition and replace as required.

Hope all goes well and you stem the oil leaks.

Tony those pictures look great and they've clarified a lot as to how rear camshaft leaks occur. I need to look for those plugs since I didn't add those on the list But hopefully, I won't need them.

GAH! I can't seem to find a part number for those inner plugs. Where's PET when I need it? That's it I'm installing it on my work computer

You can't buy the plugs anymore, they have been superceded by 'pins'.

woah! No kidding I wonder if there's a tech bulletin on this. thanks for telling me Chris. I guess Tony's right up pretty much shows as to why Porsche dispatched them from the cam towers.
