Default Timing belt broke tonight...:( Update

Luckily it's an 80 model, whew! Ineed to figure out what parts I need, flywheel lock, belt, what else?

Sorry to hear that Justin. Details / photos? Did it break or strip teeth? Any indications this was imminent? Age of belt? Last tension check? Glad there is no engine damage.

I know noting of early models but I am guessing you still have the rollers and tensioner rebuild. Also the Kempf Tool is a must.

What happened?

Now there's a lesson learned/earned...
FWIW
I have a new flywheel lock -now there's a piece of heavy metal- unused.
And a spare Kempf tool with instructions -check this site for added info on belt installs/ re-tension using the Kempf tool.

Coming home fron dinner with G/F, and the car was running fine, then all of a sudden, the car acted like it was running out of fuel, exhaust popping and such, then it started running again for about a second then died out,at first I thought, damn fuel pump relay, so I opened my glove box where I keep a little jumper wire just for this reason, and started taking the relay out and pluging the jumper in, well the pump fired up and I thought ok this is the problem, well I was wrong, no start, then I went to the engine and pulled the air intake pipes off and told my G/F to crank the car while I looked down the little vent holes in the timing cover, well there it is, no belt moving, just sitting there smiling at me, stupid belt. So My brother came to the rescue with the car hauler and took me home. The car is in the garage and I will start disassembly Sun., I will keep everyone informed on my finds. Should I do the water pump while in there??

John, I will let you know on the flywheel lock, I have a Kempf tension tool already.

Out of curiosity...
Were you just crusing, accelerating, or decellerating when this occurred?
Cool on the tools.
The flywheel lock was sent to me as an after thought by Snow, the PO of my son, ZACK's,
White 81 about a year ago.
I told him if I used it or sold it I'd send him the proceeds.
The flywheellock tool comes in two models...78'-82 MY or, 83'-95 MY and run $49.00 new if you need/want it make a semi-reasonable offer..
On disassembly I pulled the upper fan shroud, and viscous fan assembly for working space.
Including hose removal takeds about 15 minutes and gives you all kinds of space.
Lean the viscous fan against the wall in the more or less upright position to prevent possible leakage.
The tower covers -in my case don't come out or reinstall easily.
Some twisting/force was/is necessary, just be aware that the covers get brittle over the years and the possibility of breakage/cracking is very real. I was lucky and came out of it with no damage.
Spray cleaners and cardboard under the car for a great clean up is the way to go.
I also pulled the airclenreer, upper and lower box with AFM. Sray degreaser,rags, smallbrushes on the MAF worked great, then a light coat of WD-40 on moving parts.
While you are waithing for parts -TB/WP/roller & tensioner components- If you feel ambitious ...
Pull the intake box and tubes to clean all the crap out of the valley, rplace vacuum lines.
Even if you don't pull the intake... with the airbox and AFM off you might as well change the plugs. A much easier operation when you can get at the rear plugs.
The ability to reach nasty/greasy areas for cleaning really improves the look of the engine/bay area...
Like most nimrods ... I wear the engine runs smoother after a modest clean-up.

I'm very sorry to hear about this!

I hope your engine will serve as another example or proof that these early engines are non-interference (even though you have the high compression version of the 4.5 Litre engine).

Justin, you really don't need the flywheel lock. Just put it in 5th gear, and set the parking brake. That's what I did and it worked like a charm. You'll be back on the road in a week or so. No worries!

I have an new square tooth TB ( but has been in my spares box for a few years), possibly an intact tensioner boot ( which is NLA), and a new idler roller ( I must check) for the '80. - for the outrageous cost of mailing. You then likely need a tensioner roller. If the water pump is dry, spins freely - and has absolutely no lateral shaft play, I would leave it in as a companion to my 25 year old pump.

Thanks guys, Ive done the timing belt and water pump on my old 944 about 3 times, so Im kinda familar with this job, but never worked on the 928 to this extent. I dont have a full week to do this,(daily driver), so I will be rushing to get it done,I will try the 5th gear and parking brake trick Andrew told us about, I will be at Zims early in the morning getting parts. This does suck big green donkey d!cks, but oh well, there was no engine noise when the belt went, just exhaust popping. I was cruising at 40 mph when it happened, probally in 4th. I do want to do the vacumm lines while in there, I have some that are not looking to good.

Ok, guys, heres the scoop, the belt wasnt broken, but there are teeth missing, I also found the belt to be very loose, so with further investigating, the tensioner has failed, I can move the tensioner roller with one finger and see the rod going into the tensioner moving VERY easly, Is this normal, are tebsioners high priced items? Do they normally fail, car has about 155k on it. The oil pump, waterpump are free turning.
