Raced an M5 today
From what I can tell it was probably a 99-00 BMW M5. I was behind following him from a merging lane onto the highway. There was a car in front of him and took a while to get it to move over. I down shifted to 3rd and kept the rpms around 4500 (right where I wanted it). Once the other car was out of the way we both stepped on it. From about 75 till 110 both cars were even. After 110 I moved over to the middle lane and started slowly gaining on him. As the speeds climbed I started to gain more and more on him. At the end, my front bumper was at the middle of the M5. Essentially a car and a half gain. I was roughly a car length behind him when the whole thing started. There was traffic coming up on us, so we both called it off at this point. Once we both got back to the speed of traffic I slowly passed him. He gave me a thumbs up and I did the same. At the next off ramp I had to get off to go home. Next time he sees one, I hope he'll remeber the power of the 928.
This shows that there is hope for the old 928s too. I bet he was just as supprised as I was for pulling on him.
I haven't yet looked up the hp numbers for the M5s but I know they are around 400.

Im0oo-Funny I raced one yesturday. Not off the line but from 90kmph to 180kmph. He was alredy ahead by 200feet when this started. I stayed with him and we just kept accelerating. I backed off though because, I still have some serious winter tires still on the vehicle. Unfortunately I didn't find out if I could overtake him!!!Whoops , it looked to be about 4/5 years old.

Justin,
It’s an ’85 928S 5-speed, very few modifications. Electric fan, Air pump and AC belt off, Chipped, home made exhaust cut-out and a K&N. The K&N is only for it’s re-usability. My avatar has a typo in it. The time should be 13.541 sec. @ 105.9mph. This was last years time, before I added the fan and the cut-out. Every calculation indicates that the car is putting down around 288hp at the wheels and not at the motor. Maybe Porsche was under estimating the hp figures.
The car vas defiantly a drivers car all it’s life. A little rough around the edges but mechanically it’s all good!

This is a great post, your car is the same as mine and really hauls. They have a really restrictive exhaust, have you ever thought of putting some good headers on it? If you do, I would use stainless ceramic coated and wrapped as I really didn't like the sound it made. Too tinny. But I got an extra 14% top end power.
Another thing with my car, I think one of the reasons the acceleration is so good is that the wheels are very light and savings in weight in the wheels are said to be worth 4 times what a reduction in body weight would be worth.

the M5 should be pretty even with a stock shark in a STRAIGHT LINE....hit ANY kind of twisty - and he'll be in your rear-view. I have watched several M5's at AX's - they have LOTS of body roll and understeer. On a 60 second course for me - they run about 65 seconds!

The M5 is a nice, fast, and comfortable car. The ones I've driven just keep pulling. We have friends who just got a CPO'd 2001 recently. We will be setting up a little "run" sometime soon. The husband has not been in my car since the SC install, and thinks I have been doing a little "tuning" over the winter. Should get a free dinner out of it at least.

I re-checked the model year of the M5 I raced. It had to be at least a 2001 or up.
Every spec. on them states they are 400hp, 6speed and ¼ mile is 13.2sec. According to this, they are a lot faster than a stock S4. I think an S4 would have hard time keeping up with one and not the other way around. Yes, they are heavy but they R powerful too. Also, AXs are not really meant to test an M5 or an 928 for that matter. They are better suited for smaller more nimble cars. A road course would be the way to do it.

Nonetheless - my shark and I won our SCCA region's BSP in '03!

Not just weight but areodynamic efficency... why a Dodge Viper has a hard time with a other sports cars with less HP past 110... drag becomes a big player here... your 928 was cutting the air... the M5 , I am assuming from my eyes, is not very areodynamic.

All the above points are logical, but to my understanding 928s are not as efficient aerodynamically as they look.Is this true? If I remember right, the 928 is more aerodynamic from the rear than the front.
What are the CF (Coefficient of Friction) numbers for the 928, the Viper and the M5? The Viper looks sleek enough to be able to cut the wind well and the M5 have an average frontal surface area too. Now the Dodge Ram with the Viper engine will have aerodynamic problems for sure, no need to look at it’s numbers to see that.

M5 should be quicker than all 928s in straight line - and quicker cross country too (it has set quicker lap times around the 13Km Nurburgring). So your car must have a great engine.
