Always wanted one. This particular car was bought by a friend of mine from the original owner, a guy he knew somehow, not sure exactly. I volunteered to fly out and drive the car back. No PPI, no nothing. Car was all original with about 13,000 miles on it at the time (1999).

It was one of those cars you hope to find. Guy bought it new for his wife. She had a Range Rover and only drove the 928 now and then (13k miles in 12 years) but had all the maintenance kept up. Basically it just sat in her garage all that time, depreciating.

My friend has a lot more money than me and he buys all kinds of cars just sort of on a whim. On the way back to Texas with this 928 I called him from the road telling him how much I was enjoying the car and how well it was running.

When I got to his warehouse he asked me if I wanted it, that he had decided to go into 60's muscle cars. I told him I'd mail him a check when I got home.
$23,000 in 1999. Had a place with a good reputation go through all the maintenance items as soon as I got it. Put about $4500 in it then, so about $28,000 in the car with maintenance all caught up. I probably overpaid but I'd do it again I suspect.

I think it was titled in his name for a short while but I drove it the whole time so I consider it a 2 owner car.

I drove it almost 15,000 miles the first year I had it. Was my daily driver and took a couple of long road trips in it.

Since then I've sold a 308, an NSX, and a 68 Camaro for lack of interest and no use for the cars. Or, some would argue, to fund the maintenance for the Shark

I was always into muscle cars until i got married. In 1981 i sold my 1980 corvette and went the family sedan route.By 1987 i was getting the itch again for a sports car. After looking at Grand Nationals,RX7s ect i decided on a new Nissan 300ZX Turbo loaded which set me back 29k plus tax.One night on the QEW coming back from Toronto i see these headlights coming up fast behind me so i punch it and this car comes up beside me and paces me up to about 110 then leaves me in the dust like i was standing still, that was my first encounter with a 928.Five years ago i went to look at a testarossa that was a disappointment but lo and behold there sat this sweet 928S4 and it was a done deal!

I've always liked the looks of the 928, saw it in the movies, Scarface, etc. We were coming back to Vegas from California. I'am running in the center lane in my Pantera when this S4 pulls up next to me and gives me to high sign. My wife say's " I just know your not going to let him goad you into racing are you." It was more a statement than a question. I replied, " what, do I look like a teenager?" I quickly down shifted to 4th and nailed the "Polecat". I couldn't believe that the 928 was able to keep up with me. This is something that very rarely happens, and we ran together for about 10 miles at over 150mph.

I started looking for my 928 soon after. I found it after I was out bid on EBAY for a red 87 in Florida. I found the one that I bought in a pawn shop. The PO hocked it to save his business. I believe he lost both. Any how a got an email from the guy selling the red one about a week later. Seems the gal that out bid me didn't have the money to pay for the car. I guess things happen for a reason, my black beauty was 2 grand cheaper, and my wife doesn't like red cars. An added plus is that she likes the 928. She's scaried to death of the Pantera, says it's to loud, to fast, and it's no where near as comfortable on a trip. The cat doesn't have cruise control, power steering, and the radio is useless when the engine is running. I've only had my shark fo 10 months, but it's a joy to drive on a trip. Most people don't know what it is. It got classic lines and will still look great 50 years from now. And the best thing about owning a 928 is the people on rennlist! I've met and made some wonderful friends. I have other cars but the shark is a favorite of mine.

My father spread the 928 bug to me. It all began in ’83 when he purchased an ’82 Black/Black 5 speed which he still owns. He always jokes around that he’s owned the car longer then most people are married to their wives. Fast forward a few years and I was born. Throughout my childhood I always loved the look of the 928 and the awesome growl of the engine. I had a huge 928 poster hung up in my room, which is still there today. He would pick me up on occasions from school in the car and all the kids would say “awesome Ferrari.” It would always make me laugh because it said Porsche on the rear, but if they said it was a Ferrari I had no problem with it.

I built a few V8 engine models as a kid and I would always say I wanted a V8 when I got older. Anyway I always loved the car. When I was around 13, as usual we would travel to New Jersey to visit family. I always liked to visit because there was an exotic car lot nearby my grandma’s house. This year there was an amazing car sitting out front with a for sale sign on it, an ’82 Guards Red 928 with 65K miles. At first sight I fell in love. My father looked over the car and concluded it would probably make a good track car. We took it for a test drive that day and the engine ran exceptionally strong. We came back a few days later with cash on hand and we were ready to purchase it, but it refused to start this time. My father told the owner if he could fix the car by the end of the day we would purchase it, because we were leaving for home that day. Never less the car was not running by the end of the day so we departed empty handed. We gave the man our contact information just in case. About a month later we received a call from the shop owner. The car was now running, it had a bad alternator. My dad decided to take a flight up to NJ to purchase it this time. He now tells me he has no idea why he drove a car without fully knowing its history 550 miles. Luckily, the car gave him no problems and he arrived home in a record time (heavy right foot).

I guess it was around the end of my 8th grade year when I really came down with the 928 bug. We were in the garage and my father asked me if I would like the ‘82 guards red 928. At first I thought he was joking around, but he was serious. I was like “heck yea!” For the next 2 years we worked on the car to bring it back. The car was very solid, but had numerous small things wrong with it. Leather was tough in some spots, crotchy synchros, bad AFM, old alpine radio, sunroof jammed, etc. We put in new seats, new alpine unit, replaced dash, redyed the entire interior, took the cat off and added a Borla exhaust and numerous other upgrades. Spending numerous weekends in the garage, we sorted the car out to what it is today. Allot of people I know got new Mustangs and Lexus, but there is just something totally different when you’ve put blood and sweat into the car and not just received it. Since I’ve put countless hours into the car, it makes me respect it much more and I’ve become bonded to it. If someone offered me an S4, I don’t thing I would trade it, I just like it that much. It also made me realize how much love and affection went into designing and producing the 928. Needless to say I’m driving a classic Porsche and absolutely love it. It gets allot of attention at high school; most people think it’s a current Porsche. Without the help of my awesome father I never would have had such an amazing first car!

Default Whim...

I picked up the 84 928 on a whim. I had a miata weekend car, but my wife was afraid it was too small, and it would kill me in an accident. I sold the Miata on a Saturday morning, and picked up a craigslist add 928 with just a short test drive for the same amount of the sold miata- 3,400 dollars. The car was very well maintained, and it looks like it... so, just a whim...

The miata is a toy, this is a real car

There was a post on here that said "someone save this car" In it was a link to ebay, to the car. The car was owned by a friend of a regular on the board. So I made a call, 2 hrs later paid for the car with my amex. Then 3 days later gave some guy 300 bucks plus exp to drive it from Napa CA to Erie PA and thats the story.

Not really a "how I got in to 928's" post, but today at Home Depot I was getting in to the car (takes awhile from the wheelchair) and a guy in an SUV said, what year is that? I said, "'92...the only one in the US. Porsche didn't import any that year and I bought this one in Germany and imported it in 2000."

Then he parks his car and as he is walking by he says, "that is the one with the V8 right? I thought it was a '00's car! Beautiful."

I LOVE 928's!

...accidentally while looking for a car for my son, I stumbled across SATA. A friend had an '84 new off the lot (back in high school) and I thought it was pretty cool so I checked it out.
86.5 MY, 37k original miles, and he took $3700 for it. I was very happy that day!

I had always wanted a 928 since they came out when I was 12. I bought the green machine in 2000. I was finally making some decent money, and I was sick of driving crappy cars or trucks.

I did some research into the various years, I knew I wanted an early car. I kinda watched online for a few months, saw the usual reds and blacks and silvers, etc. None of them really rang my bell, so to speak. I wanted something colorful and metallic with a good interior.

The previous day I had just finished a big cabinet job, all the bills were paid, and I had just got the final 10% payment from the client. The check was for $7000.

Next morning I was drinking coffee, firing up the computer (it took like 20 minutes to boot up), and I remember saying to my wife, "Gonna look for a green 928." I swear that's true.

(Side note: my most memorable cars have all been green. Not by design, it just happened that way. I learned to drive in my dad's green Fiat X19. I lost my virginity in the back of a green station wagon. I got arrested in a green '68 Cougar. I restored a green Triumph GT6 with one hand in a cast the year after a tablesaw accident. The list goes on...)

So now finally the computer is working...

...AND THERE SHE WAS!

I KNEW that was MY car the SECOND I saw it! #0941 oakgrun metallic. 39,000 miles on her. In Toronto.

I called the owner and offered him the $7000.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Mine found me while I was working on a project site in the Philippines. Construction Project Manager owned it and had it stored near Denver. I bought it sight-unseen, thinking that for that low price it was going to be a project car. It wasn't, at 22k it was still very new. Seller spent a lot on depreciation alone for the eight years he owned it. It's been a good car for me. 75k miles later I can say that pretty safely.

I'll tell you how the last one materialized for me.

I was down here in Virginia, surfing the internet, and spotted an 85 on craigslist up in Connecticut. "Original owner, parked for 10 years, just change the fluids and drive it away".

It was Christmas, I didn't have much money, and my wife was pissed about the 3 928's in the driveway, the money pit she called it .

So, that left only one thing to do. Quick PM to a rennlister and major enthusiast up that way. Something like "Hi, I just spotted and interesting car near you, I can't buy it, but you oughta have somebody check it out".

He kept me posted over the next couple of days. Something like: "Its not quite as good as we had wished, non-runner, but I'm going to buy it anyway. At a price where I won't get hurt. Will put it into the hands of somebody who will take care of it / too many projects. Or part it. Oh, and you have first dibbs".

So, its now almost New Years. Scrape together just enough money. Ask my dad if he wants to take a road trip. He'll think about it.

Next morning I wake to stuff being thrown. Yelling. "WHAT car? Wife is pissed. While sleeping, my dad called her and told her he wouldn't be able to take the road trip.

Eventually I convinced her to make the PayPal transfer, and drove up to New England by myself, transfered it from one trailer to another on the rennlister's snowy, steep driveway. Drove home and finished the save. PPI consisted of "Its 32V, so can you peek into the cam vent holes and confirm that the timing belt is still intact?" Turns out, it was! Never turned it over.

Its been just over a year and she's starting to get used to it. But I don't DARE mention another one.
