Thank you. Strangly enough the insurance was the same for a 2004 Honda and the 928 but still very expensive (about $2k for 12 months)

I had the privilege of meeting your son at Sharktoberfest last year. He and I had a good laugh. Great young man. Nothing to worry about with him. I also met your lovely wife. Again, nothing to worry about with your son. Mom will keep an eye on the both of you. Tell him congrats and read him the quote at the bottom of my signature.

Just reset the mileage when you're close to home and coast a lot.

I think it's appropriate and cool, ONLY if the youngster knows not to overdrive the car. Certainly the way I drove my Renault 5 or Mazda GLC as a kid, I would have been far safer in a Porsche. For my girl, she will likely get an old Mercedes. She'll get to drive the Porsches and even own one but never alone. Not at first at least. Mark, I'd delete kickdown for now, and have him promise not to shift out of D, and also to stay to all speed limits. For now.

Let me add that my parents got me a 1988 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 and I came out fine. Mark's son is far more responsible than I was at his age.
Maybe you can go high tech and get some sensors (GPS or something) in it that will report his speed if he goes over say, 75mph.

I think just running regular unleaded would make a difference, since good knock sensors would retard timing. Another better simple option would be to adjust the throttle cables. If you can make the car run like a 944 n/a, you'll be getting closer to your goal. But with all the additional safety that a 928 affords. You could use a Dastek etc (of which I have a spare I'll send if you need) to set timing more conservatively....

You could probably limit the throttle cable travel somehow. I would definately get both of you signed up with the Bondurant Teen driving school. He needs to know what the car can and can't do, as well as what he can and can't do. It would be a great time for both of you.

Doesn't the cam hall sensor going bad retards 6 degrees?
I'm sure John S. or Authority could do a custom set of chips to reduce power, would be the first request ever!

He is a straight A student and very responsible but only time will tell how he handles this. After buying hundreds of wrecked 928's I have yet to buy one where it looks like the occupant was seriously injured and I think it is much safer than the other cars we were considering.
My son is coming up on his 15th birthday and I'll be setting up the 90GT for him to drive. Like your young charge, my son is a responsible kid with excellent grades, and none of his father's daredevil. However, having said that I am going to go to some length to keep things in perspective. Here's a website that has some good info on GPS monitoring. I think this would be an excellent compromise on freedom with parental control. www.alltrackusa.com/faq.html
I am also in the process of developing an igntion cutout that can be preset to whatever RPM is desired. The issue so far is that the later cars have dual independent ignition circuits. I wonder if it would be effective on only one set of four? IT's just an RPM rev limiter, so I can set it for 2800 or so until he gets the feel of the car.
The only other strick control I will put on is NO BOY PASSENGERS EVER! If anything untoward were ever to happen it would be because some daredevil goaded the driver into a stupid decision. That's a firm statement on my part.
Just some ideas, congrats on the new ride for your son, and I think the 90 and up cars are the best of the lot for safety. Good lighting, visibility, control, airbags, ABS, and a strong cage.
Doc 90GT, fixing for my son.
