At tonight's PCA meeting we had a Porsche rep in. He gave a pitch on the 997 ... blah blah, and then said he's had over 120 company cars during his time with Porsche NA, and his two favorite cars are the 928 GTS and the 997. A few heads in the club turned my way ... about time we got a little more recognition.
Later, I asked him if he was familiar with Al Holbert and the 928 world speed record. He said yes, he was at Bonniville the time. He remembered the mirrors being removed. He said the car was just a few seconds off on the different runs, just the variance due to different wind conditions. I told him the car still lives.
The PCA rep was on hand to deliver Jay Leno's Carrera GT. Jay invited the team to the green room for his show and then they went to his garage. He gave a tour and then cranked up his jet motorcycle. He asked if they'd like to try the jet bike ....

Funny thing is, I met quite a few people who owned lots and lots of different Porsches, and say the 928 was their all time favorite. It's usually those who have never driven one, who have 928-phobia, who don't appreicate them. And those who want to show off and need a car that is instantly recognized as a Poorsh...

I have owned a 911 SC Targa (1980) since new. It is still in pristine condition with 117,000 miles. I never gave a thought of ever owning a 928 since it was ONLY a GT cruiser. I owned a 1984 Porsche 944 for 12 years and liked it but kept coming back to the 911 as the "real" Porsche. I found a good deal on a 1984 Porsche 928 S and bought it for my wife. Unfortunately, she will not give it back. I absolutely adore the 928. It is a fast and luxurious car and a real head turner, especially when the Indischrot paint is buffed to the max. I prefer the handling of the 928 to the 911 and really enjoy getting a chance to drive it. I do not enjoy service calls with the 928-----$200 for hatch bracket repair, hunting some corroded connections, etc., the upcoming cost of radiator work, the tbelt issue which by the way caused an engine replacement in my 944 and the seemingly unending switches that stop working, intermittent speedos, etc. Slowly but surely these problems are being worked on, some by me and some by pros. I do not do electrical.
Just a note from a confirmed 911 nut who now loves the 928.

I think it comes and goes...
On Sunday I had three seprate people come up to me and say wow I really like your car... one remembered, "that has a V-8 in it right? The third guy had a cherry in pristine condition 88' 911 Turbo (I really liked it)... walked over to me and said I never liked those cars till today, there's somethng about yours... etc etc.
Last night, on the way home a guy "I think an LA Laker type" (I work down the street from where a few live), in a new 360 Modena pulls up next to me and smiles, we give each other the thumbs up... he was in the turning lane so no rumble in the jungle.
Trust me a 928 in good condition turns heads.

A couple of years ago, I spoke to a gentleman at a car show, who told me that he had worked on the 928 project in the middle to late 80's. He said the Porsche executives were given their choice of cars to drive, and the vast majority chose the 928, which in his opinion adapted best to the autobahn.

I always get a kick when people see it for the first time and comment about how they really loved them back when they were growing up (Echo-boomers). They say, in awe, not derogatory at all, "those are four-cylinders, right?" I just smile and politely correct them.

I've never driven one, but from what I've read, the 996 and 997 are turning the 911 into what the 928 was conceived to be from the beginning - a comfortable, high performance GT. They've made the 911 easy to drive, comfortable, with all the amenities you'd expect of a BMW or Benz, but it will go like hell when you want to.
They couldn't sell the 928 to the "purist." So they just hoodwinked them. We know better.

Rich,
I smiled when I heard him say that.
I have always beleved the 928 to be the most underrated Porsche ever. Not as nimble as 911 mind you, but a very special car indeed.
What did find funny is each year the "new" 911 gets more and more like a 928. It some ways it too bad that the 911 was so poplular. Now the factory thinks that Porsche = 911. Even now when the second generation of "New 911's" (I consider a 911 to be a from a 901 to 993) comes out they must spend so much effort convincing folks that it is a 911. "See... it is really is a 911!" Hey the 997 is nice, but drives more like 928 than a 911.
Really a stripped out Cayman (what a god awful name) will be more more closely realted to the 911 than the 997. 911 = fast, raw, sports car 928 = Fast, comfortable, great handling Grand touring car.
