Default Alternator: how does the "start up" circuitry work?

hi,

I've read about the early sharks having problem getting the alternetor to start up, so a resistor was fitted across the crharging warning light.

I have a new, but non-stock alternator in my '81.

It charges fine at first, then gradually the voltage drops. But when (after) I press the odo reset, the voltage jumps up. I believe the plunger takes a lot of current, and that this is sufficient to kick off the charging again.

Should I put in another resistor, to draw more current from this start up circuit thing?

Or is my alternator toast?

What is the recommended replacement alt. for an 81 euro?

MM
