Default Computer chips

Just installed my new fuel injection computer chips bought from Rothmans Cup on Ebay. VAST difference in performance. I took several different speed measurements prior to the install, ie. 30-60, 60-90, 80-110, and was well pleased with the results after the install. All three measurements posted lower times after the chips, with the 80-110 showing the biggest difference, nearly 2 seconds. Anyone else had similar results? WELL worth the money so far.

What's the cost for the chips & what's involved to install them?
Thanks!

My cost was $75 (ebay) + $10 s/h USD. Installation involves the removal of the 2 procesor units and the swapping of the chips (30-45 min). Very easy procedure. Works extremly well with the 85-86 32V engines!

Garrett, what was the time improvement for the 30-60 mph test?

30-60 was just over a second at 1.1. 60-90 was 0.7. 80-110 was 1.8. Just to maintain an objective point of view and to insure that my money was well spent, all times were averages of 3 runs at each speed, both before and after installation. I am pleased with the improvement per dollar spent. VERY easy install with complete instructions. Start to finish about 30 minutes. Would love to have dynoed it prior to and after, but the stopwatch shows a marked improvement as far as I am concerned. Just got online tonight, so if you have more questions, leave them and I will answer later this evening.

Those are impressive improvements, Garrett. Congratulations. Seems like someone else was raving on Rennlist about that particular chip some months ago. Is that where you heard about it?

How accurate would a stop watch be when the car accelerates from only 30-60, 60-90 and 80-110? 0-60 or 0-100 would be alot more accurate comparison. 30 mph range is vey small.

I'm guessing, but the reason for the small range was to keep the car in one gear only during the tests, right?

Steve, I had seen a few posts on them with mixed reviews, so I figured what the heck? It wouldn't be the first $100 I had thrown to the wind. I started looking for them on Ebay. I bid on one set a month or so ago and didn't follow them very closely and wound up losing them. I just kept checking back and finally found another set.
Dave, I didn't do a 0-60 test yet, just really didn't think about it. I will try it in the next couple of days and post the result on here.
Imo000, exactly right on the gearing question. I wanted to see raw acceleration without shifting coming into play, since I wasn't really sure if it changed the shift points or not. I should have noted that as well, but live and learn I suppose. Will also try a 0-100 and see how it turns out.

Ok, I've seen chips on Ebay, you have me thinking the same way, $100 is well worth the $$ if it results in more get up & go!! So what brand exactly am I looking for or does it matter as long as they say they work for a 928?? Is Rothmans Cup the manufacturer or just the retailer?? Pardon the ignorance, just want to make sure I get the ones that you have verified do the trick!
Thanks again!

Hi, I second the q's that Mel stated, especially who the manufacturer is, but also do they make a chip for the "89" 951?

I'm still amazed at a 1.1 second improvement from 30 to 60mph for just a chip swap. Garrett, is there any potential downside of using a "no-name" chip that you are concerned about?

When I've instlled the chips into the 85S the bottom end torque seemed to decrease a little but the top end increased dramatically. The decrease in the lower rpm was about a third of the increase in the top end. Essentially you have to loose a little to gain some.

So a 1.1sec improvement in the high rpm is bit more than a 0.5 sec overal improvement.

This is why a 0-60 or even better a 0-100 test is more accurate to measure the effects of a chip set. Best way to measure this is at the 1/4 mile track of with a acceleration device.

After all, if you average the improvments of all the 30mph tests performed, the net gain would show 2+ sec decrease in accelaration time. 2+sec is over 150hp increase. My experience tell me that a chip set will add roughly between 15-30hp and not more.
