Roll Cage Photos
I've been pretty busy getting ready for this Open Road Racing season,
so I haven't posted as much recently. But here are some photos of
the rollcage that Marc Thomas from DEVEK put in last month. Here
are a couple of before photos:
This was how I ran the car last season with the roll bar:
Here it is with the rollbar and seats remove:
Now with the rollcage:
From the front (with my son Josh in the car):
With some padding:
Thanks Marc for doing such a great job.

Good idea to go with a full cage; looks like some nice welding. That ORR business scares me with just roll bars. What is with the removable bar? Is that 1.75? DOM or ERW? .095 or .120? I'm stocked with 1.75x.120 DOM right now, although I wish I had some .095 to use on a few pieces.

One more thing...
Check the racing/DE forum for more info than I could give you, but many safety experts consider 2 point shoulder straps unsafe without being routed through the seats. In a crash, they can slide off of your shoulders if not retained to the seat. Just something to think about... I wouldn't want that to happen.
Do you have a picture of the B-pillar base and rear diagonal bases?

Red,
I don't have the details of the material used, Marc has built these before for
ORR, so I let him make those decisions.
The removal bar is for the highest speed classes. I don't need it for 155 or 160 mph
class, though I may use it anyway. I does make it easier to get in and out of the car
when it's pivoted out or removed.
And sorry, I didn't take any photos of the mount points. I'll try to do that
this weekend.

George--
It looks kinda funny, a full-cage car with carpet still on the tunnel. A little paint, and that cage will disappear in there anyway...
Lookin' good!

Bob,
The plan is to get some flat door panels and new carpet in the same color.
Should look almost stock..
Heinrich,
It attaches to the floor at 4 points (with welded plates) and also welded to the
top of the rear shock towers.
Heinrich,
So I should wear steel racing boots and shin guards? That is a concern.
I was trying to keep the dash stock, so that made it impossible to get a bar
under the dash, though I think the 928 has one there already.

Honestly George I see no alternative. You will have to replace your dash for now with a POS dash and cut it appropriately. WYAI also get POS floor mats, don't cut nice ones. Don H did this and I still have nightmares of fine leather GT components with sawzall work done to them. And in the end? It all came out anyway. Look .... in any real crash where the cage becomes useful, you are going to lose your legs, and those tend to carry major arteries.

So I know that you are not allowed to go past a set speed, when running in open road racing, depending on your class, but have you taken your car to it's top speed, without anyone around? Or is there no good way to clock it?
