Default 928s at Hershey today

I flew out from Denver on Friday for my first swap meet at Hershey, mainly to see what it's all about and maybe spend a few bucks, but also to go 928 shopping. Unfortunately there were only 3 for sale in the corral, one of which was a very nice 89 S4. Some of you may recall my post a month or two ago in which I expressed my desire for an '86 5-speed in cherry condition. Some of the advice you gave me was that it would be a lot easier to find an S4 in that condition than an S. I'm convinced that's true.

I combed the parking lots and saw about 10 sharks today (no GTS's), which gave me a few to look at even though most weren't for sale. Before today, I had never seen an S4 or GTS body style in person, only pictures, and always preferred the earlier body style. The three things I realized today:

1. The only bad-looking 928 is one that hasn't been looked after (I saw a couple of those).
2. When seen in person, the S4 looks a lot more impressive than the S.
3. I got the shark jones BAD.

So, I'm expanding my search to include the S4 (and any Amazon Green GT's that might find their way onto fleabay )

There is a 91 5sp on e-bay. I think the color is amazon green. How deep are your pockets?

Dave;

Too bad we didn't see each other at Hershey yesterday... but, by bad looking 928, I assume you saw my new 5 litre beater-ex parts car. The blue 85 5 spd with half the clearcoat missing. It made its' maiden voyage due to the inclimate weather, otherwise I would have taken the GTS.

You should have stayed around for the burnout contest we 928'ers had at the end of the day. Sure did make a spectacle. Maybe Eric D. will post the pic of the smoke bomb I left.

Yup, I recall seeing your car, but the really bad one was the red one in the vendors area that was somewhere around row B or C. I can understand not bringing your GTS unless you were planning to enter it in the people's choice concours.

I would have like to meet some of the Rennlisters but I didn't know how to identify anyone. I had to leave for the airport around 2:30 but I wish I had seen the burnout contest.

Dave;

I'm not a concours kinda guy...

I don't remember a red one in the vendors area, I did see the gold 85 that HRE Racing had for sale, the one they bought off Ebay for cheap. Dented on the pass rear.

Did you get a chance to talk with Drew, The young guy selling the turd brown 79 5 speed for $2700? That was a hellacious deal. He let it got for 2400. Original paint and great shape too. I tried talking him into raising his price to $4500. Oh ,well.

Next year, come on back, but let us know ahead of time so we can show you around.

Hey 911Dave, we have a beautiful 86.5 5-speed for sale, just sitting here gathering dust on our back lot. It is a black on black, side molding delete, bilstein shock car with the factory optioned radar detector. It has 110k miles and is almost perfect, running gear and appearance. If I don't fix my 86.5, it may become mine so grab it while it's available...........

If you want more info or pics, just call or e-mail. I have been cleaning up our GT for sale but I could put it next in line.

Oh yeah, before I get yelled at, we are asking $11,900 for the 86.5'.

I'm 2.5 hours from Hershey, got discouraged by the rain and stayed home. Were there enough 928 vendors, parts, cars to merit a trip next year? When I looked at the PA Porsche Club website pic I only saw 911-type cars.

Dave & Steve,
I'm guessing that the turnout was weak as a result of the ominous forecast. I know of 5 928 owners who either didn't go, or decided not to drive their car (me) because of the forecast. Not a drop of rain after 11 or so...go figure. This was my first time there, but most regulars said that I shouldn't have judged the usual turnout by yesterday. Toward the end of the day, a dark blue auto GTS w/Georgia or Fla. plates showed up & parked next to the blue & silver auto S4's.
I was hoping to see a few hoods up showing off some supercharged sharks, but I didn't see any.
So the highlight to me was when that kid hopped in the Carrera GT, started it up, blipped it a bit, and got on it in the open parking lot area. Now THAT'S a sweet sounding car! You could hear that whine clear out of "Chocolate Town". It's for sale, BTW for only $417k (but you'd be the second owner).
Dave,
I'm sorry to hear that you flew all the way from Colo. for such a thin 928 showing. The 928-specific get-togethers that are touted on this list are often the way to go if you're in the market for a good shark (if you can wait long enough for the next event). There's always a good showing, there are usually a few for sale, and if not, you'll likely get a solid line on a few that are out there. Moreover, you'll come away with a much better sense about what you want, what you can afford, etc. from some of the true aficionado's who show up and host the events. You can also get an unbaised critique of a specific car from the fellow 928'ers who are in attendance & who have years of experience under their belts. It's not unlikely that somebody will know all about a specific car that you're considering, whether it's there at the meet, on eBay, etc.

Scott - did you hear that gold 'dented' car when they were revving it at the meet yesterday? Something didn't sound right...like a groaning bearing or something. The car looked like it had been joy ridden a few too many times, and sounded like a time-bomb looking for a place to happen.

J.P.;

Weather fooled people again! It was pouring rain at 6am, but by the time I got to Hershey it never rained a drop. Sun came out around 2ish. And I had a beautiful sunset for the blast home.

I scored a brand new Accusump for $75 Plus cleaned house on some 944 stuff I needed.

Eric and Sam showed up late in her new 94 Iris blue GTS...swweeet car.

I've suggested in the past that they park cars by type, but they think it's too much hassel.

I didn't hear the gold car, but I remember it on Ebay...

One of the suggestions I discussed with Larry was to have a 928 only (or close to it) swap here in central Pa. I have the place/space and parts to pull it off. Not this year but plan on something for next summer.

JP, even with the light 928 turnout, the trip was worth it. I travel for a living so I used points to pay for everything. It was really helpful to see a number of different model years in good condition. If I don't find the right car before the next shark meet (or even if I do!), I'll definitely try to go. Unfortunately there don't seem to be many sharks in Colorado or any of the surrounding states for me to look at.

the trip was worth it
Dave,
Glad to hear it.
You'll find that if you do plan to go to one of the 928 get-togethers, if you post on this list just prior to the meet and mention that you're interested in buying a shark & the specifics, you'll find yourself talking to, and learning from many well versed people at the meet who'll be looking out for you. Associating yourself with the 'people in the know' prior to buying a shark is by far the best way to get the car that you're looking for without making a mistake.
You'll also find that the 928 community is a close-knit one.
Scott,
I think that a central; or southcentral meet would be a success....especially if it's touted on this list in advance. I must admit, I'm a bit spoiled by the Frenzy's & how close they are to me. That said, I'd make a drive to central or southcentral PA for an organized meet, and I'd do what I could to get some local sharks to make the trip as well.

Hi there.

Horrible show. What a waste of time and money. Never been to a worse Hershey meet. Less vendors, less people, more pain in the as-.

Just my opinion.

Dave, you should hook up with our 928 group. Great folks and a lot of fun. Had a tech day two weeks ago and we had 8 cars. Just email the address below and we can put you on the list. Oh yea, it's free.

I feel badly for anyone that came from more than an hour away for Hershey this year. Worst one I've been too... maybe weather, or maybe people saving their trip for the Parade in a couple of months. That having been said, it would have been worth it just for the "burnout" session you mentioned Scott... how late did you stay? Must have missed you guys... we took off around 2:30, but I had the 86.5S there most of the day.

Landhai;

I don't know, I would (and have) gone regardless of the weather or turnout. I find solitude in just being around the cars. I guess that is why I have so many sharks, one for each occassion. I took the very ugly 5-litre-beater 85, due to the rain.
Sorry I missed you. We smoked rubber around 4:30 ish. My sister works at Hershey park and was rather upset of our exploits/childness. She mentioned that they have the parking lots videotaped. Naturally I begged her for a copy. We'll see.

Scott
