Camshafts won't come out
I'm trying to remove the camshafts from the cam-towers (1980 928) and neither one will come out. I can move the camshafts about 4 inches forward, but then they seem to get hung up and won't slide out any further. There is nothing loose in the cam-towers to get in the way (ie bolts, etc). I have them on the bench, not bolted to engine, lifters out, also removed the lifter sleeves. Any ideas? What am I missing?

the distance from one camshaft journal to another is about 4 1/4 inches so it is not lining up as soon as you move off the journal the cam drops down on all the remaining sections so evn if you hold the nose up the other end is not lined up

Jim, that seems to be the problem, however no matter how carefully I wiggle/cajole/line-up/position etc the cam will not slide thru the journal. The cams will slide backwards into the original journals, but will not pass thru the forward journals. I've positioned the cam-tower vertically, horizontilly, used my fingers to support the rear of the cam, but nothing seems to work. Frustrating.....

Yes it is nearly always difficult to get them to line up and slid.... they will go either direction if you remove the rear cap. Since it is the bearing surface and oil fed the tolerances are quite tight.
