Bad reception in radio. Strange wire. Any ideas?
I'm having trouble with reception in the radio. Not great on FM and none on AM. I'm an AM junkie so this is a big problem.
I pulled out the glove box and traced the antenna wire to make sure it was plugged into the window antenna. It is, but there's a second wire that comes out of the box that's connected to the windshield antenna and it runs all the way down the line with the regular antenna wire to the stereo. In every other car I've messed with, the big antenna wire that plugs into the radio was it. This second wire has a square plug on the end that was not plugged into anything. I'm guessing it's a power plug for a built in antenna booster?
So, anybody know where it goes and/or what it's for?
Thanks!

Dont know about the window arial type, but my bee stink and shark fin arials both have the extra wire which goes to 12volts to boost the signal. Have tried the radio without the connection and dont get am or mw, and the fm signal is not good on distant signals. With the booster connected the whole range is bang on. Connect it to an ignition live rather than a constant live....No need to drain that battery needlessly.

Was there a connection from the original Porsche radios that it was connected to before? Just wondering why there's nothing to connect it to back there. The PO had a Sony in it so I've never seen the back of the original radio.

most radios in the uk have a wire for power arial to connect to, either the blue or orange, not sure. If your radio is newish it might still have the tags on the wires.....jim

Perfect!! I have the blue power antenna wire. I'll use that for the antenna booster. That one's not connected because I don't have a power antenna or an external amp for it.
Thanks for the great info!

I've got the same problem - poor FM and no AM reception. Haven't got around to looking at it yet.
My car has the windshield antenna and the roof mounted 'shark fin' antenna. Which antenna is used for the radio? If it's the windshield one, what is the function of the roof antenna?

Randy,
Good question - since my recent windshield replacement I now have what Porsche North Scottsdale refers to as the only available OEM windshield for a 928GTS (they also say it like it was always this way...). I have my doubts since all these cars already had the roof antenna right? Did some cars use the windshield antenna for a cell phone (or vice versa?) is this a line item reduction by Porsche - after all what do they care if you must purchase an antenna screen even if you don't really need it?
Those of you with GTS's with known original glass... they don't all have antenna's down the middle right? if you do have it do you also have a factory phone interface? (mine didn't have an antenna before but appears it wan't original glass even though it was the "correct" SIGLA part). Incidentally all the ID numbers on the new screen match exactly the one taken out... so what indicates the antenna anyway?
I'm still confused on this... and getting used to the faint line
Alan

That is the Antenna Booster Power Connection, see the Nichols site in the Audio section, called the Antenna Booster Power Connection. I had the same problem and hooking it up to a 12v power helped my reception. Ed M
Save you the trouble, from the Nichol's site:"You may have the same problem I had, when a previous owner had the original radio the store did not reconnect power to the antenna booster. Originally power for the booster came out of the back of the Blaupunkt and I believe it is this small black wire you are talking about which runs with the antenna wire - it should have switched 12V supplied to it. When I spliced this into my switched radio power, I got good reception. The antenna booster is just above and to the right of the glove box - remove glove box and follow antenna wires."

I did as TRUESCOTSMAN said and attached the blue wire in the radio for the power antenna to the small black wire attached to the regular antenna wire. It works beautifully now!!
The two wires (regular antenna and small black wire) both go to a little black box behind the glove box. There's a wire from the window antenna that plugs into the other side of that box. I guess the box is a booster for the antenna so providing power to it worked.
I'm assuming PR is public radio (let me know if I'm wrong here). Sorry, not much for that, just the local talk guys.
Later folks!

I was working on my antenna connection today as well.
In my case, the problem is the connection to the final plug that goes into the head unit. I did a solder repair but need to find a new plug connector. A trip to Radio Shack, an audio specialty store and an auto parts store - didn't find one.

I believe (I'll have to go look) that I have a new antenna cable from a kit I had to buy to replace my defective antenna on my car when I first got it. The new antenna solved my problem, so I didn't have to replace the cable/wire assy. You can have mine if you think it would be of any use to you, maybe the connector could be spliced onto your existing cable. Let me know.
