Thanks for the offer, Bill and John!

I'll let you know - I'm hoping I can find a connector plug replacement (like are available for coax cable ends). The diameter of the center wire on the antenna cord is slightly greater than a human hair, so makes it difficult to affect a good splice.

Any answer out there on the function of the roof antenna?

Randy,

I do have the cable if you are unable to find a new connector for yours. On the roof antennas I believe that there is a signal amplifier built in that is powered by the smaller wire (12V). If that amp isn't working, you'll get crappy reception on both bands. A new antenna fixed mine. I don't have an antenna in the windshield on my car with the roof antenna. Perhaps the windshield on your GTS was replaced with one that has one???

Hmm, interesting.

I'll look into that - thanks, Bill.

Randy,
Did you ever figure out if your radio is using the windshield or roof antenna?

I still wonder about any GTS with antenna glass - Why?

Incidentally the connector is on the passender side right in the bottom corner by the A Pillar cover - I'm assuming if fits right under here - mine is dangling over the dash for now - but I'll tuck it under next chance I get. Is yours just tucked under there disconnected (I suspect so... unless you've got a cell antenna?)

Haven't dug that far back in there yet - I only see the one antenna wire at this point.

Agassi ordered my GTS without the roof antenna. Not sure what he was thinking. I am debating about adding it back.

Um, there was no such thing as digital (satellite) radio for cars when the GTS rolled out of the factory.

I had one fm station and no AM on mine. Pulled the aerial lead at the aerial (rear power unit) and found no connectivity - a break somewhere. Went out and bought a genuine Hirschmann lead with screw on fittings etc with a view to lacing that through. Lets verify it will fix problem before fitting it--- new lead was broken internally! Damn! Got two extension leads at a local store. Found point where original lead came in through wheel well under rear quarter cover, and it went into a little black Hirschmann box, where the screw on connectors were all corroded and bad. Removed box, connected extensions, laced under edge of quarter cover, across under seat, down the tunnel, BINGO, full set of FM and AM stations. Cost around $10 and a few hours. Now I dont have to disturb the radio wiring at all (shudder).

On cars with the roof antenna, is there a separate antenna amplifier? If so, where is it located? I have the antenna powered lead hooked up to 12V (blue antenna wire off radio), but reception is still poor.

On my car, the antenna coax cable goes from the radio, down into the side of the center console 'hump', then I assume it goes to the rear of the car from there.

The antenna amp is in the base of the roof antenna. IIRC, you can pop the sunroof motor cover off and check it...

I pulled the sunroof motor cover off and can't see how to access the antenna - the sunroof controls completely block access to the antenna base, nor do I see anything that resembles an amplifier.

Any suggestions?

Randy, the base of the antenna is the amp. Removing the antenna is a monumental PITA, take it from me. The nut holding it in place is buried under the sunroof mechanisms, just follow the coaxial cable to the base of the antenna... you'll see it. I had to do a little dismantling of the sunroof crap to get to it, it was such a traumatic experience that I have forgotten all the details...j/k Just takes a LOT of patience, but then it is a 928 after all!

Randy...What does the connector on the roof antenna look like? ..I'm thinking the antenna is for an analogue phone system 800mhz to 900 mhz..the antenna would be about 8 to 11 inches in length there abouts.....IMHO....Bill
