Default looking for an S4...

I've decided that I won't buy another car unless I can get what I want. The 86.5 was an awesome car, but I always lusted after the S4 body style.

With that in mind... The car I REALLY want is essentially a rolling S4 shell in very good condition. It would be very nice to have the motor intact, but the rest of it isn't a big deal. It can have a missing transmission, bad interior, bad LH, or whatever. Just as long as it has a very straight body with no dents and a good paint job (since paint/body work is the only thing I can't do on my own). I would prefer a car that was already a 5spd, but will do the conversion if I must.

It would be very nice to find a car with less than 150K miles... lower the better. I plan to use whatever parts from my 86.5 necessary to get the rolling S4 running (which is why some of the S4 parts can be missing).

My budget is DEFINATELY under 10K. I'm aiming to spend in the 4-6 range... not sure if what I want can be had for that price, but we'll see.

thanks in advance!

It seems like that should be doable. Here's 2 well under $10k:

The body of the '89 looks a little rough, but the '87 is sweet.

I don't think you'll have a problem. I bought S4 5-Speed for 10K and it ran well and looked great when I got it. If you're not as concerned with how well it runs, that should bring it down a good bit.

The things that seemed to really run the price up were the perfect interiors and/or perfectly tuned (i.e. all maintenance up to date and recent). The exteriors of all but one of the S4s I looked at were excellent. Even if a PO couldn't work on an engine, they could still wash and wax so and almost all of them were garaged. They looked new so the PO would look cool in his Porsche, even if it ran like crap.

Good luck!!

I know where there is a nice white S4 At that needs a waterpump timing belt. The guy who owns the car lot wants me to do the work but he doesnt want to pay me enough, he tried trading me a 944 for the work but I told him I would pass. I think this car could be had for $5500.00 to $6000.00 in SC.

If interested I have a fully equiped shop you can use to do the repairs in if you want.

PS: Since your a Rennlister if you wanted to come down one weekend I would help you knock out the belt and water pump if that helps and you could drive it home.

Is the belt broken? Or just needs to be done? Is he not driving the car? It sounds a little funky... I'm sure Mike would like some additional details about what happened with this car...

The owner of the lot Bought this car at an auction. Since then it has been sitting for well over a year. It starts right up but runs a little rough and the tension light stays on so I advised him not to run it until that is fixed. The rough running may be bad gas but the belts and pump are due. Car looks very good overall. Interior is in decent shap. AC does not work and there is no radio. As Randy states I know the guy that runs the lot but I would not consider him a buddy. I will be glad any info for you but keep in mind that I am not making anything off of this deal.
