Exclamation Bent gearbox input shaft!

I finally traced the massive vibrations I'd had from the torque tube and geabox.

After strugling to get the gearbox out (it took 9 hours, was I doing it right???) I found that the splined shaft and hub that go between the drive shaft in the torque tube and the torque converter in the gearbox is actually bent.

I've check the central drive shaft and this appear to be striaght and true. So the question is how in the hell did this relatively short shaft that is support by two bearings bend?
Has anyone experienced this?

Can you post some better pictures of the part showing the bend?

I can't seem to get your pictures. Is this the splined reciever that can get bent if you try to hang the tranny off it during removal? I don't know this personally, but I have heard it said.

It sounds like it could have bent during the removal process, I doubt it is designed to endure the weight of the gearbox. I would think that if it was to break during normal use, it would have either twisted or sheared off from the torque of the engine. Did you remove the torque tube without prying on it before you lowered and removed the tranny?

Hi CJ, what's the update on this? Have you ruled out that the vibrations you're experiencing are not coming from the torque tube - be it worn bearings or worn/damaged vibration damper (if such exist on your model year)? Is there any play on the shaft, or are there noises when you knock heavily on it or tilt it back and forth in case the tube is taken off? I'm currently in the process of rebuilding the tt on my car, I got the bearings today (sourced them locally), and is now starting to search for a machining shop who hopefully can make new seals for the damper...

Hello,
I couldn't face removing the torque tube. (I'm doing this job with the car on axle stands)

as far as I can see into the tube there are only two bearings, and with the shaft disconnected it spins freely with out any problems. So I'm gonna leave it alone.

I really don't know what caused the shaft to break but this si the 3rd gearbox that's been in the car so perhaps the person who installed it didn't do it right and that's how it got bent?? I really don't know. I'm putting it back together today, so keep your fingers crossed for me.

Once this job is done I'm going to drive the car home, wash and cover it and put it up for sale. I've had enough...
