Default Kempf Tensioner

Does anyone know if the Kempf tool works on the 4-valve-head 944S?

Brian..........considering the design of the tool the calibration is the spring and the expected range of tension between the respective cam drives and tensior rollers on the 928 engine. If the circumstances are replicated on the 944 4 valve engine then the K tool is perhaps accurate. Do you know the tension of the 928 and 944 engines when measured with the Porsche tool?.........if similar then the K tool is then perhaps within range.

I only know that they are very similar in appearance. Of course, they are both interference-design engines, so I want to be certain about this!

AFAIK it doesn't. There should be something in this (928) forum archives.

Check out the 9201 tool tension set points respectively for the two cars: 5.4 for the 928, __ for the 944. I do not know if they are the same, but a similar '9131' clone could be calibrated on a correctly set 944. This could become the "BG" 944 tool when the prototype hits production ...

the 944 has an equivalent - it is called (IIRC) the Cricket. About the same price.
The Kempf tool will NOT work on a 944.

I did a timing belt job on an 85.5 944 once and had the same question. Basically i was told by a mechanic at Vertex in Florida that the way they do their timing belt tension is to tighten the belt until you can no longer turn the water pump pulley by hand against the belt. I am not saying this is correct and i realize some hands may have better grip than others, but i did what they suggested and didn't have any problems for the 3 years the car was in the family. Mind you a 1985.5 944 is not a 16 valve model so it may be different. Vertex also suggested MINIMUM tension on the balance shaft to eliminate the whirring sound it was making, a little scary but it worked.

Brian,
I use this inexpensive tool from Optibelt, works like a dream and very easy to use. Never had any belt problems in my S2.
