Default WP Timing Belt Problem

I find myself in the middle of a WP and Timing belt job on my 82 and I cannot seem to get the main pully off the crank by hand, can someone suggest on how this comes off?? Do I need to procure a puller, and if so what size?

Thanks

Many nay say the puller. Try lots of penetrating oil and a couple of wraps with mallet and commence wiggling. Walk away, cus a lot and wiggle agian. If all fails you may want to use a puller, but be carefull that you don't ruin the pulley.

Hope you're replacing main seal/cam seals/oil pump seals, etc.

Sorry I can't help, but can I selfishly ask if you have any more pics of your yellow 928? I was actually toying with the idea of having my red one painted yellow since it needs a paint job. I like the look of yours. I like the Ferrari yellow as well.

The multi-belt pulley normally falls off after the crank bolt is removed - so I'm guessing that you are referring to the (blue or orange?) harmonic balancer. If it is the pulley, rap it with a block of wood or soft faced hammer.
The balancer may need a good shot of penetrating oil on both sides - and a lot of tapping all around the rim, again with a soft faced hammer. Pullers are generally not advised - but we have all used used them behind closed doors; however, if it comes to that, only use the (3-jaw) puller to place a modest strain on the rim while you continue with the tapping. The outer rim is rubber bonded to the inner, so avoid a $$$ mistake - be patient.
THe crank gear can cause the same problem - often if the key is 'cocked' in the keyway. Assure that it is absolutely level: if not, correct with a brass drift/hammer - and reassemble everything with anti-seize ....

Get a hand on each side and wiggle it back and forth (forward and back, not around the crank). If after 10 minutes (literally) of wiggling, if it doesn't move any more than it ever did, you may have a problem.

It should come off well before 10 minutes, but it will take some time and effort.

I've said it before. Wiggle (almost vibrate) the balancer off. The pulley can come off with a bit of gentle GENTLE wedging of a screwdriver or other blade. That one is so thin it shouldn't pose a problem.

I'll admit to it-I gave up and used a 3 jaw puller after an day of penetrating oil, and an hour of pulling/tapping/wiggling/cursing.

Very gentle pressure on the puller, combined with tapping with a rubber mallet and pulling/wiggling with my hands boke it loose. Then it came off with just more penetrating oil and pulling/wiggling by hand. If you resort to the puller, be very gentle.

Clean up the surfaces with a scotchbrite type pad, and use anti seize when you put it back together.

first time I used a 3-prong puller, GENTLY increasing the pull by working around the circumfirance, 1/4 turn of screw at a time. Cleaned the crank end with 000 paper, lots of wd40, no problem the next time.

I just finished mine and had to use a puller. I was careful and followed the routine mentioned above by Jim R.

Just finished the same thing. I wiggled for about 1/2 hour before realizing that everytime i tapped it to "loosen", I was tapping it back on.

PB Blaster. Then...

Heat Gun!!!!

Works every time. It takes about 5-10 minutes to get the damper warmed up - just to the point of almost too hot to touch - and then wiggle it off.

I may have to put it in the oven to put it back on.
