Hi All
could anyone please tell me what kind of A/C compressor(make and model?) was installed in the 1990 928 GT. I recently purchased a rebuilt compressor from a chap on E-bay, the compressor that was sent to me is different. The rebuilt compressor has different mounting points and is slightly larger than the one I removed from the car. The E-bay seller claims that the compressor sent to me fits all model years from 1980-1994.

Dan,
Porsche used the 6e171 Nippondenso from 1980 until '89 or '90. Then switched to the 10 cylinder Nippondenso for the rest of production. The 6e171 will work on your car but you have to change the hoses to the older style and the crankshaft pulley is larger on the earlier cars, so you have to change to a different size drive belt. It is doable, but the hoses probably cost as much as the correct compressor.

It is a Nipondenso 10PA20C. The problem is just because you get the same model doesn't mean that the bolt hole pattern will be the same. Many cars use the 10PA20C but the bolt hole patterns are different! I have recently replaced my 1990 compressor with one that I found on ebay that claimed to be for a corvette. It was the same model and the bolt hole pattern looked the same but their was one small differance. One of the mounting bolt holes was 1/4" longer than the rest or should I say the one that I bought had all 4 mounting hole brackets the same width and the Porsche one has 1 that is slightly shorter. I was able to easily grind 1/4" off the new one and make it fit just fine though. The new one works just fine and cost $99 (rebuilt)

Here's the one I bought on ebay for a Corvette

Notice the bolt hole pattern. Here's another 10PA20C for an Acura.

Notice the differance? Like I said the Corvette one did work but still had to be modified.
