What's so great about about the 86.5?

The MY 86 Euro S2's have the S4 brakes/front suspension, the modified rear silencer boxes with modified rear suspension mount to the body. The rear section of the exhaust was then routed to get the side exhaust exit, this meant the filler for the auto ATF was moved.
They have S4 seats - back release is a lever, rather than a button. There is a delay relay on the interior lights.
Euro S2s from their introduction in MY84 had ABS.
Maybe the UK S2s for MY 86 had all the mods because they only represented sales of 386 cars, as oppsed to the 2880 that Erkka mentions going to US/CAN/JAP.

Hello John.....What you described certainly sounds like my 86. It also has 8 inch H4's and that floor control for the lights that I have no idea as to what it does, as well. I have quite a bit of learning to do as there seems to be some differences between the C36 - 84 16 valve my first love and the 86 Japanese model. It's like having a 928 for the first time all over again....as if I really new my 1st one ..lol...tnx...Regards

OK Bill,
That floor switch is a "special" all right. Japanese spec cars had the same version of the early 32v motor as US/CAN market (M28 43/44 292hp, 96RON, 10:1 copression). There was another version of the same engine (M28 45/46) which was standard for Autralia (91RON fuel, 288HP lower compression ratio 9.3:1) which was also available on special order for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These latter ones are very rare in Europe.
I have heard of one in Europe (the owner refers to it as an "S3"), and there was one in the first edition of 928 Forum magazine which was imported into the USA

Floor switch could be for change from low beams to high beams and back. Some sixties cars had such switch for left foot to operate. Very handy on dark country roads. Never heard of such system in 928 though.

Speaking of the floor switch... (my apologies if someone is waiting to snipe this one)
US eBay | Porsche 928 headlight adjuster .. Bosch 928.631.220.01 | starting bid $100
The description is incorrect, I believe the lines are filled with glycol, not air.

That is the Euro adjust on the fly headlight kit used 78-92 or so then they went to electric motors. It is my belief that the unit is liquid filled and not air filled. (air would tend to bounce too much)

Hi Erkka,
Sweden as well.....interesting ! I was quotoing from the Servicfe info for the 928 1986. Was that choice of engine mandatory in Sweden at that time, or an option ?
I believe in Germany that there was some kind of tax concession for using the M 28 45/46 32v (with cats) as opposed to the standard engine for Germany at that time which was the LH M28 21/22 without cats.

The "86.5" actually as was mentioned the first 1,000 USA cars and used up the "leftover" 1985 parts ....so the cars after chassis GS861000 most importantly got the big Brembo 4 piston calipers bigger rotors on all 4 corners , revised front suspension with flipped over lower ball joints , true dual exhaust system with resonators on both sides of the drive shaft and one passes behind the differential (small battery box) . The revised bolt on console for the rear trailing arm mount. The floor section hump between the rear seats was enlarged in preparation for the larger torque convertor used on the 1987 S-4 automatic. Rear seat releases were the same (but the hinge was modified), door speakers the same, engine and transmission the same.... In many respects the 32 valve 5 liter 85-86 was a prototype engine and there were numerous changes made to it before the world wide 32 valve 5 liter S-4 engine was introduced ....different pistons, valves, camshafts, heads, camshaft covers and bolts , head bolts not studs, water pump,Intake, ignition control (knock sensors)and injection ,minor engine block changes.

Ouh floor control is normal height adjustment and not something else, ok. We are so used to it it's hard to imagine it's news to you guys. '78 to '89 use plastic pipe and silicon fluid in it. Two paraller pipes all the way from ****, one to each headlight where small piston makes actual movement. For '90 to '95 electrics replaced them as Jim says. Usually pipes break at point where they cross over from headlight fixture to body or **** itself start to leak. Every time lights are raised and lowered pipes need to bend and this takes its toll making them snap when plastic also hardens over years. That silicon fluid is like smoke in electric appliances, once it gets out machine doesn't work anymore.

By the way, what's the RMB mod that James-man mentioned? I'm a new 86.5 owner (same as yours James-man... black, 5 spd.), and I'm not familiar with this mod. Does RMB stand for rear muffler box? Just a guess... Sorry for the newb question.

Rear muffler bypass.......a simple easy improvement in the sound and weight by replacing the final muffler with dual 3 Inch pipes. No cutting , no welding 15 minute install....and you can easily install the original if you wish (like for resale).

Thanks Jim. Now if you could just send me a link to your site so I can buy one... By the way, the PO of my 928 was Andreas Myer out of NJ. I believe he was a regular customer of yours. He kept the car in fantastic shape, right down to the original muffler.

Thanks Jim. Actually, I meant a link to the product itself (not just the site... I've been there and bought stuff before). Anyway, I was just kidding... I'll drag my lazy but over to your site and check it out.
Did those suspension changes you mention make the car stiffer? My PO said it had a "sport" suspension (which I suppose they all do, in a sense), but it made me wonder if he was talking about a special option, or if it was just the new suspension set-up that he was refering to.
