Default Is this a good price?

Assuming it passes a PPI, Carfax etc. a 1990 S4 auto (although advertised as an S4/GT), 118,000 miles, asking price $14,900.

Thanks

Answering my own question, looking at Edmonds and NADA, appears to be an OK price, not a great bargain

It sounds a bit high to me. I spent quite a bit of time looking for an S4 in nice shape....
Got my 89 S4 in almost perfect condition for $12,200 with 75k on the odometer.
The mileage seems high for almost 15k. Just my .02

I think that was a car talked about here, if it's the one it is a repaint. I don't have any other info.
As far as your question, it would be worth it if there is a lot of receipts that show really good care.

The books do not differentiate for 5 speed or auto or GT but there is a big difference yet those sales all have some influence on the "book values". In the world of collector cars 100,000 miles is a bunch and with 150,000 on the odometer almost no one is interested , so this car with another 30,000 miles would have little value to most . Reality is those miles are not all that much but the perception of most determines value in the end.

Thi one is local to me in TX. I do see that a Rennlister has a true 5-speed GT on e-bay. I'm selling my bimmer, and am going to need a run around for a while, so I am sorely tempted.

Wifey wants me to get a pick-up truck this is Texas after all!!!

Slightly OT - Anyone know where you can get a bagpipe rack for a late model Dodge Dakota?

Cheers

I agree with mcv200. A bit steep for that many miles.

In my opinion, when the sixth digit on the odometer rolls over, so does the car's value. We all know of 928s with prodigious mileages, but the only value they have is to their owner.
I paid $13,000 for my 89 S4 with 70,000 miles. It was not a perfect car.
I paid $16,000 for my present 88 S4, which had 62,000 miles, and was completely unmolested. A time-warp car. However, I never expect to get my money back. I hope to keep this one, indefinitely; but I know its value on the market shrinks, year by year, even while it continues to soar in my own eyes, which is all that matters.

I paid 10,000 for my 87 S4 with only 58,000 miles and all service records up to date. I had to replace the motor mounts and some other minor repairs which can get expensive in a hurry.

I suggest you check out the service records and find out what you are going to have to do to the car to make it a realiable "run around" especially with that many miles!

Too high. A perfect car with those miles would sit a long time at that price. Don't rush, it'll be there tomorrow(s). If it sells, another will come along.

I saw this one the other day:

http://www.buysell.com/showad.asp?id=35891058

Excellent body and interior and sounded great.

At the $CAD being about $0.83, this gives a <50,000 mile car for much less than what was being asked for a 118,000 car.

I would suspect that you could get a better deal.

Default How Much for This One?

Interesting thread ... I was just talking with a gentleman about a cosmetically nice 1991 with 119K and AC "needs a charge". TB/pump last done about 25K miles ago. Assuming everything else on it is ok, what should I offer?

It's all subject to general condition period. I have seen cars with 50k miles on them that are ripped up inside and repainted on the outside........I wouldn't pay a dime for them. I have seen others (and owned one) with over 100k miles on them that look almost like they left the showroom floor. That asking price is not out of the question if it is one of those "close to perfect" cars where most everything is well taken care of and up to date. The '90 and above cars sometime bring a small premium over previous years due to some engine refinements, new dash, PSD, Airbags, etc. Some like these features, some don't.

Maybe this will take care of both needs.

Agree with Mike, when I sold my 91 the guy had been looking for a while but couldn't find one in the condition he wanted. I would say the price variation on condition is substantial, the mileage on my car was 72K so yes that is always a factor.

As these cars get older good ones will get harder to find, what constitutes good is naturally dependant on the buyer but average to below average cars are plentiful and some of them have the capability with some TLC to become much better but usually (and sure there are some exceptions) you are best buying the best condition car you can afford. Naturally some of us like a challenge but no-one said it makes economical sense.

Back to the 91, these cars carry a premium over the 90 IMO, they have a lot of minor tweaks that showed up in the GTS. I think I would need more details than 'cosemtically nice' and 'AC needs recharge' to make an educated guess to a cars value. There are some 91's out there that I wouldn't pay 10K for.

Chris
