Lifters...curious discovery

Dave, I would crank yours over until oil pressure comes up, without plugs fitted - you will hear the speed change as the oil pump takes load - keep going a minute or two to ensure oil gets everywhere. This will give the lifters a chance to pump up before actually getting up any real revs. You may have to disconnect some of the ignition stuff to prevent electrical damage?
FWIW, I had heads off a car once, and it wouldnt start on reassembly - made a few calls and was told I would have to wait 24 hrs for the lifters to settle, as they were holding the valves open....dont know if this will apply to 928 .

I have always left all of the lifters in a coffee can filled with new oil for a day or two before install - not sure if it helped but it made me feel good to see them submerged in fresh oil. Then I just lifted them directly from the can into the holes -ensuring lots of fresh oil in holes as well.
I have also done the drill trick to ensure all oil passages were primed.
BTW, I did the drill trick on a 65 Ford motor so not sure of process in 928.

Since the 928 oil pump is driven by the timing belt the drill trick will not work however it is a good idea to pull ignition and fuel pump relays and crank the engine on the starter motor to make oil pressure in the engine. That way you have filled the oil passages with oil purged air before you fire it up.

These should pump up after the engine cranks. If they continue to clatter (Which I doubt) put ia can of marvel mystery oil in the crank case and rive the car for a few minutes. this should clear the problem. The marvel also goes after varnish that might be messing wth your lifters.
