ABS Problem

ABS Problem
Hello everyone,
I know that the ABS question has been done to death, but I guess I have a slightly different problem from the ones usually described here.
1. Turn the ignition on with my foot on the brake pedal. Crunching noise from the ABS unit - as if it is working trying to stop the car - and the ABS light stays on when the engine is started. The PSD is also off as a consequence
2. Turn the ignition on without touching the brake. Lights go out as they should. Drive off and the ABS light comes on as soon as I reach 5mph. Then the PSD warning message flashes through.
Any thoughts?
