Getting the '82 5spd that I just got out of storage ready for state inspection after getting much help from the list on un-sticking the clutch. Picked up a Deka battery at the nearby factory (cosmetic defect..cheap at $55), stopped at our local auto parts store to pick up new wiper blades (near by so I didn't feel it was too risky to drive it w/o the inspection sticker) and saw coolant dripping from the bottom of the engine compartment. Uh-oh.
Pulled off the drvrs side belt cover and peered in while I had it running, not good...saw a small pool of coolant and some 'spritzing'. Must be the water pump is bad. I guess the roughly 2 year storage killed it. Not a terrible thing since it's really overdue for a timing belt job and probably way overdue for a water pump. When I tracked down the former owners mechanic after I bought the car in early 2000 and asked him if he replaced the waterpump when he did the timing belt, he said "no, it was fine". Of course the same guy told me that "no, we didn't re-check the belt tension, that car has an automatic belt tensioner".
So I get to see how much I learned from doing the S4's belt a few weeks ago and how quickly I can do this one. I'm supposed to leave on vacation Thursday for 3 weeks + and my brother, who's buying the car from me, really wants to drive it while I'm gone....pressure, pressure. My only real concern is that I'll end up needing the waterpump bolt removal tool before I've got it done
. Lots of penetrating oil, light air impact wrench and prayer coming up.
Just venting
Jim (almost on my way to Sedona..sun, golf, warmth...no 928 though)

That reminds me, I need to order that timing belt tool from 928 International. I dumped an obscene amount of cooland down the belt cover pulling my heads.......belt isn't very old, putting a new one on anyway.

John."they looked it up in the book just like you did! " Oh how I wish that were true ....many do not have the books or the time and inclination to read ! ....... Most of the auto repair surveys indicate about 1/2 of all repairs are not needed. Be it fraud or incompetence the end result is much the same. Some of the phone calls I get from "professional" mechanics should never ever happen. It is always a good idea to ask to see the workshop manuals, the timing belt tension tool, when talking with a prospective Porsche mechanic.
